It’s not often we see something this cool come up for auction. This is a 1962 Excalibur RS Roadster, or rather, it’s the Excalibur RS Roadster, as in, the only one built. It wasn’t made in 1962 though. This came together in the 1990s, based on another car with a similar design from 1961. Confused yet? Don’t be—all you really need to know is there’s a V-8 under the hood, two seats in the cockpit, and it’s headed to auction through Mecum in May.
We’ll give you a little more info to whet your appetite. Noted American designer Brooks Stevens came up with this sleek design in 1961. Back then, it was the hardtop-only Excalibur Hawk, but plans were made for a Roadster. It never came to fruition, but the essence of that design endured until a friend of Stevens finally commissioned the Roadster project in the 1990s.

As such, it’s a proper one-of-one build, riding on a custom steel tube frame and wrapped with handmade aluminum body panels. The doors come from a Lamborghini Murcielago and open upward. And while the front doesn’t come from a Ford GT, it is inspired by the GT40.
Underneath the hood is a 5.7-liter V-8 from General Motors. Being from the 1990s, it runs throttle-body fuel injection and makes proper V-8 noise through a pair of tubular headers. Naturally, it turns the rear wheels, but despite what looks like a manual gear lever in the cockpit, it runs a 700R4 automatic transmission. Bummer.

Still, this is a sweet-looking ride all around. The interior is buttoned up nice and neat, and the engine bay is dressed up with custom intake and valve covers. The hood, doors, and trunk are power-operated, while the deep shade of blue comes from Mercedes-Benz.
The Excalibur RS will cross the auction block as part of Mecum’s Indy 2025 event on May 16. Being a one-off (an especially well done one-off at that), it’s hard to say how much it might sell for. But it looks like a great cruiser and has a neat history to boot.
