A woman in Kisoro District is in custody for allegedly killing her two-year-and-eight-month-old son by drowning in a water tank. The suspect, identified as Jacklyn Ruhangariyo, a resident of Mulindi Village in Muhindura Parish, Kanaba Sub-county, is accused of dumping her son, Salvation Irasubiza, into a water tank on Friday.
According to the deceased’s grandmother, Annah Ntawigemera, she left Irasubiza and other children sleeping at home around 7:00 a.m. as she went for morning prayers at a nearby church. Her husband, who is also the grandfather of the deceased, had gone to the garden to spray Irish potatoes.
Ntawigemera says that upon her return around 10:00 a.m., she was shocked when the other children who had stayed home informed her that Ruhangariyo had grabbed Irasubiza and thrown him into the water tank without giving any reason.
She immediately raised an alarm that attracted neighbours. When they checked the tank, they found Irasubiza’s body floating in the water. Elly Maate, the Kigezi Region Police spokesperson, confirmed the incident, saying Ruhangariyo has been arrested and is currently detained at Kisoro Police Station as investigations continue.
