Matheus Cunha avoided an increased suspension and fine by offering to buy new glasses for an Ipswich Town staff member.
The Wolves star was involved in an altercation with one of Ipswich’s personnel following the visitors’ 2-1 win at Molineux in December.
Cunha appeared to elbow the member of staff and remove his glasses as tensions boiled over at the full-time whistle on December 14.
He was charged with misconduct by the Football Association [FA] and handed a two-match ban, as well as an £80,000 fine.
Initial consideration had been given to a three-match ban alongside a £120,000 fine by a regulatory commission.
However, as per their written reasons, it was agreed that Cunha had accepted the charge and offered a prompt, sincere apology.
The 25-year-old also offered to pay for new glasses, with his clean disciplinary record another mitigating factor in the reductions.
Cunha stated in his evidence that he felt ‘quite threatened’ during the brawl that involved a ‘large number’ of Ipswich personnel.
Despite this, the FA say the commission did not see any ‘provocation’ from Ipswich personnel that would have caused his behaviour.
They also believe there wasn’t any justification for Cunha to grab the staff member’s glasses, an action that he says he regrets.
Wolves argued that the sanction should not be any more than a one-match suspension, but the commission disagreed.
Cunha was first charged on December 17 but served the first match of his suspension on Monday, which saw Wolves lose 3-0 to Nottingham Forest.
He will also be unavailable for their FA Cup third round clash at Bristol City on Saturday, live on talkSPORT 2.
However, Cunha will be able to return for Wolves next Wednesday when they face Newcastle in the Premier League at St James’ Park.
The Brazilian is his club’s top scorer this season with ten goals coming in 20 matches across all competitions.
talkSPORT reported last week that Cunha is set to sign a new long-term contract at Wolves amid links with Manchester United and Arsenal.
