Wayne Rooney says many players ‘need to leave’ Manchester United in damning squad assessment

Wayne Rooney has called for multiple members of the Manchester United squad to leave the club amid a second consecutive dismal season.

United continue to be a shadow of their former dominant selves, with their last Premier League title win coming 12 years ago.

Since legendary manager Sir Alex Ferguson left in 2013, five permanent managers have come and gone at Old Trafford.

Although such appointments have failed to deliver, United’s player recruitment has also faced plenty of criticism.

Around £1.6billion has been spent in the years following Ferguson’s departure but the club have only six trophies to show for it.

Ruben Amorim is currently in the United hotseat and has struggled to turn their season around as they sit 14th in the Premier League.

Club legend Rooney admitted things have been difficult for the Portuguese head coach, adding that a lot of work is still to be done.

“I think it’s been a difficult start, of course, with results,” he told BBC Sport before United’s FA Cup clash against Fulham.

“But I think what he’s trying to do, we’ve seen obviously players going out on loan, and I think there’s a lot of players who need to leave the football club.

“I think he’s slowly trying to do that and really, I think his time will start next season.

“I think they have to find a way to get through this season, the FA Cup, there’s still a chance they can go and try and win a trophy.

“There’s big changes on and off the pitch at Manchester United which I think from next season we’ll start seeing the real changes.”

United have enjoyed more success in cup competitions compared to the league this season.

They reached the Carabao Cup quarter-finals and last 16 of the FA Cup, whilst also progressing to the Europa League knockout stage.

However, United are at risk of failing to qualify for Europe this season as they remain 13 points adrift of the Premier League’s top five.

The summer transfer window will likely prove pivotal to their success again, otherwise a return to the glory days may have to continue waiting.
