‘Unhealthy obsession’ – Philadelphia Eagles’ Super Bowl winning architect reveals secret sauce that he can’t quit

EntertainmentSports‘Unhealthy obsession’ – Philadelphia Eagles’ Super Bowl winning architect reveals secret sauce that he can’t quit

Howie Roseman is one of the most respected general managers in the NFL.

He ended the Philadelphia Eagles‘ 52-year wait for the Vince Lombardi Trophy in 2017 and added another Super Bowl triumph earlier this month.

Roseman has used the NFL Draft brilliantly to form a formidable roster — and it turns out he has a very simple formula.

Before the NFL was a pass-happy score fest, there was a firm belief across the league that games were won in the trenches.

The Eagles subscribe to that philosophy and are a throwback to a bygone era.

Speaking at the 2025 Scouting Combine, Roseman revealed that much of his offseason is devoted to filling out his offensive and defensive lines.

“You can never have enough offensive and defensive linemen,” he said.

“We’re always on the lookout at those positions at every level whether it’s in free agency, whether it’s in the Draft, whether it’s after the Draft, whether it’s on the street.

“It’s really like an unhealthy obsession to be honest with you.

“So I never feel good enough because I can convince myself, I can go back to a game from this year and see that we’re down three offensive linemen and now I’m looking to find eight starters.

“Those are incredibly important positions and you can never have enough of them.”

Saquon Barkley, Jalen Hurts, A.J. Brown, and Cooper DeJean steal the headlines.

Barkley thrived behind the best line he has ever played with

But it is steel that Philadelphia’s postseason run was built on.

One of the best offensive lines in the NFL helped Barkley smash records as he took advantage of huge holes. And the Tush Push — so effective some rival teams want it banned — would not be possible without the big men up front.

Lane Johnson, Jordan Mailata, and Landon Dickerson are seasoned figures, while 2022 second-rounder Cam Jurgens emerged last season and Mekhi Becton has thrived since leaving the New York Jets and arriving as a free agent.

Defensive coordinator Vic Fangio didn’t need to dial up a single blitz in the Super Bowl as a simple four-man rush had Patrick Mahomes scrambling from the off.

Josh Sweat was superb, while Jalen Carter made a mockery of the teams who let him fall to the Eagles in the 2023 Draft.

Becton and Sweat could both leave in free agency after bounceback seasons.

“I’m not asking anyone to feel sorry for us,” Roseman said. “We have challenges because we have a lot of good players, and we have long-term contracts with a lot of our players who are in their prime.

“And so my expectations aren’t that we’re going to have to lose a lot of players, and that means that there are excuses for next season. It’s just it’s going to look different.”

Philadelphia holds the last pick of the first round in April and Roseman is being tipped to stick to his formula.

While fans will be dreaming of the latest hyped prospect in a skill position who dazzled at the combine, the Eagles will likely look for value.

ESPN analyst Mel Kiper suggested Ole Miss defensive tackle Walter Nolen could be the selection in his latest mock draft.
