Southampton v Swansea prediction
Southampton can take their minds off their Premier League struggles this weekend and focus on their FA Cup campaign ahead of Sunday’s clash against Championship opposition as they look to put their name into the hat for the fourth round draw.
Ivan Juric has lost all three of his matches in charge of Southampton since being announced as Russell Martin’s successor in the dugout at St Mary’s, most recently falling to a humiliating 5-0 home defeat by Brentford last weekend.
The defeat leaves the Saints stranded eight points adrift at the bottom of the Premier League table and 10 points from safety, having picked up just one league win all season and currently with just six points to their name after 20 matches played.
The Hampshire side have lost each of their last six matches at home, and take on a Swansea side this weekend who have lost just one of their last four matches, picking up seven points in that time.
Luke Williams’ side are enjoying a strong season in the Championship in this current campaign, with their 1-1 draw at a top six dwelling West Brom side last weekend keeping them in the top half of the table and just six points shy of the play-off positions.
The Swans have won only one of their last four matches away from home though, falling to a 4-0 defeat Southampton’s local rivals Portsmouth in their most recent match on the road back on New Year’s Day.
The Welsh side have won only one of their last nine matches against the Saints, of which they have lost seven, including each of their last four, however I fancy the Swans to cause an upset this weekend against a Saints side bereft of any form of confidence – I predict a 2-1 away win.
Southampton v Swansea betting tips
Swansea’s Liam Cullen has been in fantastic goal scoring form this season, bagging 11 for club and country in all competitions, which includes eight goals in his last 12 matches ahead of their trip to Premier League opposition this Sunday.
Defeat at Old Trafford in the Premier League on Thursday night will leave the Saints with a worse points-per-game ratio than that of the infamous Derby side who picked up just 11 points in the entire 2007-08 season.
Southampton can’t buy a win at the moment and I don’t expect that to change on Sunday against a Swansea side enjoying a good season who will be hungry for a cup upset this weekend.
