Science and TechnologyAutoSound Up: The Lexus GR GT3 Sports Car Sounds Amazing

The Lexus/Toyota GR GT3 sports car can’t come soon enough. Originally debuting in concept form at the Tokyo Auto Salon in 2022, the production version is destined to hit the road sometime in 2026. But before it does, listen to these sweet, sweet sounds of the prototype testing at Laguna Seca.

Captured by photographer Alec Gamino and posted to Instagram, the quick 8-second clip shows the GR GT3 prototype racing down the infamous Corkscrew at Laguna Seca before heading off-screen. You can hear—what sounds like—a burly twin-turbocharged V-8 engine under the hood before the driver drives out of view. Just listen to this thing:

Granted, this prototype doesn’t have the same high-pitched wail as the V-10-powered LFA. But, with a modified version of the RC F GT3’s 5.2-liter V-8 engine likely underhood, it could make even more horsepower than its predecessor. That V-8 is already capable of 500 horsepower in the RC F GT3.

We’ve already seen spy photos and video of the GR GT3 testing at tracks like the Nürburgring and Spa-Francorchamps—but it’s great to see the supercar testing here in the US as it inches closer to production.

Rumors say we could see the GR GT3 race car debut as early as this year before the street car shows up in 2026. As Lexus’s new halo car, expect the GR GT3 to cost well over $100,000 when it finally goes on sale.
