Sony Open in Hawaii 2025 golf betting preview

After just 59 players contested last week’s season opener – The Sentry at Kapalua – the second leg of the PGA Tour’s Hawaiian Swing sees the first full-field line-up of the year.

As is tradition, Waialae Country Club plays host and it’s a course very familiar to PGA Tour punters.

Opened 98 years ago and very much on the short side at just over 7,000 yards, Waialae is a flat, coastal track with small bermuda greens.

Hideki Matsuyama won last week with a crazy 35-under but scoring is tougher at Waialae, averaging around 20-under over the last decade.

Matsuyama will attempt to match the feats of Ernie Els in 2003 and Justin Thomas in 2017 by starting a new season off with victories in both Hawaii events.

That shows it’s possible and the Japanese star is just single figure odds to do so in what is a fairly weak field.

Tragically, last year’s Sony Open winner Grayson Murray committed suicide in May so there will be plenty of emotion and fitting tributes paid this week.

Find my predictions and best tips for the Sony Open in Hawaii 2025 below.

Henley can win again

Russell Henley achieved the very rare feat of winning on his PGA Tour debut when he took this trophy in 2013.

The American hasn’t quite had the stellar career that some predicted after that stunning breakthrough but four PGA Tour wins is still an enviable tally and sets him apart from almost everyone in this field.

His latest, the 2022 World Wide Technology Championship, came on another short course (El Camaleon) with Bermuda greens so this is exactly the type of test where he flourishes.

Henley has proved it time and time again at Waialae with a fourth last year and a second place three years ago when he was five shots clear during the final round before eventually losing a playoff.

Some wind in the forecast won’t bother him one bit and after shaking off the rust with a 30th place in last week’s Sentry, he looks primed to make another big run at the Sony title.

Eckroat can beat Theegala in a 72-hole match

Sahith Theegala rather underwhelmed with 36th place at The Sentry last week and that course seemed far more suited to his game than this one where his two starts show 48th and missed cut.

In which case, I want to oppose him in a match bet and there’s an ideal candidate in Austin Eckroat.

The man from windy Oklahoma won twice on the PGA Tour in 2024, posted 15th last week and at this course he was 12th on debut in 2023 and the halfway leader 12 months ago.

Eckroat has a great record on Bermuda surfaces and is a strong bet at 5/6 with bet365 to beat Theegala in a 72-hole match bet.

Luke Clanton for Top 10

Rising star Luke Clanton still has amateur status but he’s been a sensation on the PGA Tour with four top 10s in seven starts since making the US Open cut back in June 2024.

Twice a runner-up, this test should suit the 21-year-old from Florida and he looks a value punt to record another top 10 this week at 17/4 with bet365.

🏌️‍♂️ Back Luke Clanton for top 10 at 17/4 with bet365 ⛳
