Rory McIlroy celebrated in most relatable way after winning £2.9million jackpot at Pebble Beach

EntertainmentSportsRory McIlroy celebrated in most relatable way after winning £2.9million jackpot at Pebble Beach

Rory McIlroy didn’t need to pop a bottle of champagne or tuck into a juicy steak to toast his victory at Pebble Beach.

The Northern Irishman instead opted for a cheat meal that proved he’s just like the rest of us along with some celebratory drinks, although his WHOOP watch exposed the fact he may have over-indulged.

McIlroy took out the £2.9million prize at the Pebble Beach Pro-Am in California, beating Ryder Cup teammate and close pal Shane Lowry by two strokes.

A stunning final round of 66 ensured McIlroy finished with a score of 21-under par, one shot behind Brandt Snedeker’s tournament record that was set in 2015.

What made McIlroy’s outing all the more special was his hole-in-one in the opening round.

Unfortunately for McIlroy, a hectic schedule meant he had little time to properly celebrate his win.

But he did squeeze in somewhat of a Californian delicacy along with something to wash it down before he jetted out of the state and over to Florida ahead of a TGL match on Tuesday evening.

“Yeah, so probably tapped my last putt in at about 3pm local time, was wheels up at 5:30pm, had two In-and-Out Burgers by about 6pm, had a couple bottles of wine by about 8pm and then landed back into Palm Beach by 1am,” McIlroy said.

McIlroy’s impressive final day to win the seven-figure prize at Pebble Beach was perhaps brought on by his recovery skills, which were captured by his WHOOP watch.

The watch calculates a user’s recovery score by factoring in the time between their heartbeats, their resting heart rate, how much sleep they get compared to how much they need as well as the number of breaths they take per minute.

It seemed McIlroy was cool, calm and collected ahead of his final round as WHOOP shared on their Instagram the Northern Irishman woke up with a recovery score of 78 per cent.

But his night of booze and burgers certainly took a toll on the recovery score and McIlroy let his followers know.

But he was evidently a little worse for wear the following day[/caption]

He reposted a picture of his score prior to the final round at Pebble Beach on his Instagram and captioned it: “In the green on Sunday.”

But McIlroy’s next picture showed his recovery score on Monday, which was markedly lower.

“Today’s recovery looks a little different,” McIlroy wrote along with emojis of two wine glasses.

Unfortunately for McIlroy, it appeared his hangover extended into Boston Common’s TGL match against Los Angeles GC.

Playing alongside Keegan Bradley and Adam Scott, McIlroy’s team did not win one hole during the triples and were down 5-0 going into the singles.

Bradley pulled one back to make it 5-1, but Los Angeles regained the five-point lead when Tommy Fleetwood beat McIlroy.

Boston managed to pick up another consolation on the 15th hole as Bradley beat Justin Rose for a second time.

McIlroy will hope to get his recovery score back into the green in time for his next event, which will be the Genesis Invitational at Torrey Pines on February 13.

The event also marks Tiger Woods’ return to the PGA Tour in what will be his first competitive event since the Open last July.
