OpenPlymouth slap club-record asking price on Morgan Whittaker after rejecting bids from two EFL clubs

Burnley and Hull have both had bids rejected for Plymouth’s FA Cup hero Morgan Whittaker, talkSPORT understands.

The Pilgrims value the 24-year-old winger, who still has two-and-a-half years remaining on his contract, at a club-record fee.

Plymouth have already sold Lewis Gibson to Preston this month in a blow to their Championship survival hopes.

Meanwhile, both Adam Forshaw and Andre Gray have left the club for free since the turn of the New Year.

However, it will take a club record fee to prize Whittaker away from Home Park during the current window.

The former Swansea man has scored four goals and provided an assist in 20 appearances this season.

His latest strike was the winning goal in Saturday’s FA Cup triumph at Brentford.

Despite sitting bottom of the Championship, Plymouth beat their Premier League opponents to secure a first away win of the season.

As a reward, Whittaker and his team-mates will welcome Liverpool to Devon in the fourth round next month.

Reflecting on beating the Bees, Whittaker told talkSPORT: “When you look at it, our first away win [of the season] against a Premier League side, not many people would have predicted this today.

“But that’s the FA Cup, anything can happen, you’ve just got to hope that you’re the ones to do it, and luckily we was.

“In the Championship when I do that, there’s normally four or five people in front of me.

“So it’s difficult, but when I got that opportunity to keep going, I just thought, ‘Just try and get my shot off.’ Luckily the space opened up.

“The season has been tough up until now, but hopefully this is a turning point.

“We’ve got a new manager coming in – our first away win starting in the New Year – so hopefully it carries on.

“We couldn’t have done much better.

“It just shows that no matter what you’re doing in the league, and who you’re coming up against in the FA Cup, there’s always a chance.

“It’s the FA Cup, things like this happen, and I’m just grateful that it’s us who it’s happened to.”

Plymouth are currently three points adrift of safety in the Championship, having parted ways with Wayne Rooney on New Year’s Eve.

Miron Muslic was confirmed as the club’s new manager over the weekend, though, with his first match at home to Oxford on Tuesday.
