Marseille vs Lyon predictions

Despite only picking up one point from their last two fixtures, Marseille is having a strong season in the French top flight.

A 1-1 home draw with Strasbourg on Matchday 18 was followed by a 2-0 defeat to Nice last weekend.

Les Phocéens has adapted well to life under former Brighton boss Roberto De Zerbi. They started Matchday 20 second in the table with 37 points from 19 matches – ten behind leaders PSG.

Keeping pace with their Parisian rivals was always going to be a difficult task. Ligue 1 is one of those European title races, where everyone knows who will win it before a ball is even kicked.

Nevertheless, De Zerbi has done a good job, bringing big name signings to the club, while staying at the right end of the division as he implements his playing style on his squad.

Under De Zerbi, Marseille has become one of the more attractive teams to watch in France. His team has scored 40 goals in Ligue 1 this season, only PSG (who else) has scored more.

Furthermore, Marseille have been in the top three since Matchday 3 of the season, and have held second place since Matchday 13. When you consider the strong performances of LOSC and – to a point – Monaco in the Champions League, that is a good achievement for a team that finished 8th in Ligue 1 last season.

Unlike Marseille, who have no European commitments, Lyon are competing in the Europa League on Thursday nights.

Les Gones completed the group stage of the competition with a 1-1 home draw with Ludogorets on Thursday. The point saw Lyon finish sixth in the group with 15 points from their eight matches.

At home, things haven’t been so good. The club dismissed Pierre Sage in recent days, with former AC Milan manager Paulo Fonseca announced as the club’s new head coach on Friday,

Fonseca will inherit a team sitting sixth in Ligue 1, with just one win in their last five league games. Lyon were also knocked out of the French Cup in mid-January, losing 6-4 on penalties to French fifth-tier club Bourgoin-Jallieu.

But Fonseca will have something to work with. Lyon is still in the European places in Ligue 1, and they started the current matchweek just three points outside of the top four and the Champions League positions.

Lyon is also only seven points behind Marseille and they are in the Round of 16 of the Europa League. If Fonseca can quickly turn his team’s fortunes around, there is still plenty to play for this season.

Marseille vs Lyon betting tips

Paulo Fonseca will want to hit the ground running in his first game in charge of Les Gones. Find out if we think he will begin with three points in our Marseille vs Lyon betting tips below:

Lyon and draw in double chance

Things have started to go a bit wrong for Les Phocéens recently, they are two matches without a win, and they will no doubt be mindful that Lyon will be dangerous with a new manager in charge.

Lyon are unbeaten in their last two in Ligue 1, and their last four in all competitions. They may well have drawn all four, but the visitors have shown they are not easily beaten.

Marseille could be vulnerable at the moment. And the Lyon players will want to impress their new boss in his first match in charge.

Both teams to score

Marseille has only failed to score in three of their 19 Ligue 1 matches this season. We already know they are the second highest scorers in the league, and after drawing a blank in their last match against Nice, they will be keen to start finding the back of the net again asap.

Only PSG has stopped Les Phocéens from scoring in their nine league matches at the Stade Vélodrome this season. And after failing to keep a clean sheet in their last three domestic away matches, we don’t see Lyon becoming the second team to shut the home team out.

Lyon aren’t renowned for scoring loads, but they have found the net in 14 of their last 15 Ligue 1 matches.

We can see goals at both ends in this match.

Mason Greenwood to score or assist

Mason Greenwood is having a good season for Marseille.

The former Manchester United forward has scored 12 goals and provided four assists in his 19 matches at his new club.

Greenwood is also the top scorer in Ligue 1, managing to stay ahead of Ousmane Dembélé and Bradley Barcola in the race to win the Ligue 1 Golden Boot.

More importantly for this wager, Greenwood has scored two and assisted two in his last four matches. He has provided goal contributions in three of the four matches.

Greenwood did draw a blank against Nice last Sunday. But he hasn’t gone two Ligue 1 matches without being involved in a goal since Matchday 6 and 7. So he is due a contribution this Sunday.
