Newcastle make decision on Kieran Trippier’s future following offer from European giants

EntertainmentSportsNewcastle make decision on Kieran Trippier’s future following offer from European giants

Kieran Trippier is staying at Newcastle after they rejected an offer from Galatasaray, talkSPORT understands.

The Turkish giants were willing to pay €3million plus add-ons to sign the defender.

They were also prepared to hand the 34-year-old a three-year contract to tempt him to Turkey.

But with the Turkish window closing on Tuesday, Trippier will not be leaving at least until the summer.

It’s understood that Newcastle’s progression to the Carabao Cup final meant that Trippier didn’t push for a move away.

The former Burnley and Tottenham star was heavily linked with a move away from the club last summer.

Fenerbahce and Besiktas were interested in taking him to Turkey, while Everton were also linked with a move.

However that switch to Goodison Park failed to materialise.

Trippier has regularly captained the Magpies in the absence of club captain Jamaal Lascelles and could get the opportunity to lift Newcastle’s first major trophy since 1955.

Newcastle will face Liverpool at Wembley on March 16 in the hope of ending their 70-year trophy drought.

Trippier moved to Tyneside in January 2022 in a £12million move from Atletico Madrid.

Since then he’s made 110 appearances for the club, scoring four goals and providing 21 assists for his teammates.

Despite that, this season has been tricky for Trippier, who has fallen down the pecking order under Eddie Howe.

The defender has started just five times in the Premier League and eight times in all competitions.

That is due to Tino Livramento emerging as the first-choice right-back at the club.

As well as reaching the Carabao Cup final, Newcastle have qualified for the FA Cup fifth round where they’ll face Brighton in the next round.

The Magpies are also going well in the Premier League and sit in sixth position, just two points behind fourth-place Chelsea.

Trippier has 54 England caps to his name, representing the Three Lions at the 2018 and 2022 World Cups as well as Euro 2020 and Euro 2024.
