Open‘My head hit the wall’ – Lewis Hamilton’s former back-up driver reveals scary details following horror crash

Pascal Wehrlein revealed his ‘head hit the wall’ during his horrific crash in last month’s Formula E season-opener in Sao Paulo.

Ex-Formula One driver Wehrlein briefly served as reserve for Lewis Hamilton at Mercedes before becoming a superstar in the world of Formula E.

The German won the 2024 World Championship with Porsche, but his title defence got off to a disastrous start in December with a frightening crash.

Following a collision with Jaguar’s Nick Cassidy, Wehrlein’s Porsche flipped onto its side and was sent airborne before it bounced off the wall on its side.

The German was trapped as the car remained upside down but was thankfully rescued quickly by the medical team and recovery crew.

He was transported to hospital and swiftly discharged with the doctor only advising him not to travel.

Porsche did confirm that their driver sustained a concussion and bruising to his chest and lungs.

He had to visit the hospital once he returned to his family as he had difficulty breathing on his flight home.

“The scary thing about this one was, first of all that I hit my head on the wall,” Wehrlein revealed.

“The halo got quite damaged, and actually, on one side, it was out of the monocoque.

“So the halo moved a lot, which made my head hit the wall. And the other thing was that I was upside down, and I couldn’t get out of the car. Physically, I was feeling fine in that moment.

“With all the adrenaline in your body, you don’t feel the pain yet, but also you want to get out of the car if you see sparks flying and so on.”

Pascal Wehrlein was at Mercedes as reserve driver for six years during Lewis Hamilton’s reign

The halo, which became mandatory in 2018, is a curved titanium bar that surrounds the driver’s head in the cockpit to absorb impact from objects or crashes.

It was designed to calm safety concerns after the deaths of Henry Surtees, Jules Bianchi and Justin Wilson.

As the reigning Formula E world champion, the 30-year-old has carved his own way in the sport after failing to become one of Toto Wolff’s two drivers for Mercedes.

He joined the team as a DTM driver in 2013, being the youngest to ever do so and was then promoted to full time reserve driver two years later.

Wehrlein was essentially loaned out to Manor Racing for 12 months where he made his Formula One debut at the 2016 Australian Grand Prix.

Unfortunately upon return he remained as reserve and eventually moved on in 2018 to Mahindra’s Formula E team.

The German then transferred to Porsche for the 2020/21 season.
