Manchester United got back to winning ways on the weekend with a penalty shoot out victory over Arsenal at the Emirates Stadium to book their place in the fourth round of the FA Cup in their bid to defend the title they won last season.

The victory in north London saw Ruben Amorim’s side end their five match unbeaten run, which consisted of four defeats, ahead of their match against the Premier League’s bottom club on Thursday night.

The Red Devils’ hard fought point at Anfield against the runaway Premier League leaders Liverpool saw their match losing streak come to an end but leaves them 14th in the table, five points off the top half of the table after Tuesday’s midweek round of matches.

Thursday night sees the Manchester side take on the league’s bottom side Southampton, who have picked up six points from their 20 league matches so far.

The Saints have lost nine of their last 11 matches against Premier League opposition, drawing the other two, and a further defeat at Old Trafford on Thursday would leave them on track to pick up the fewest Premier League points in a season on record, ‘beating’ Derby’s 11 points tally in 2007-08.

Croatian manager Ivan Juric was hired just before Christmas as Russell Martin’s replacement and picked up his first win as manager of the Hampshire side on Sunday afternoon in a 3-0 win over Championship side Swansea in the third round of the FA Cup.

The south coast side head make the trip to Old Trafford eight points adrift at the bottom of the Premier League table and 10 points from safety, and will be needing to reduce that deficit sooner rather than later to have any chance of survival next year.

United are unbeaten in their last 16 matches against Southampton, though the Saints are unbeaten in three of their last four matches at Old Trafford, including each of their last two.
