Manchester City vs Liverpool predictions
Manchester City fans are used to giving out the ‘ole’ treatment to chastened opponents. On Wednesday night the boot was on the other foot.
Real Madrid’s supporters were cheering their team’s every pass in the closing stages of a 3-1 victory over Pep Guardiola’s side, a result which saw them advance to the last 16 of the Champions League by an aggregate score of 6-3.
It was a chastening night for City. They were completely outplayed by Madrid, as Guardiola himself acknowledged afterwards. “The best team won,” he admitted.
Overturning a 3-2 deficit from the first leg was always going to be tough. The Estadio Santiago Bernabeu is an unforgiving place. With Kylian Mbappe in red-hot form, City just could not cope with the reigning kings of the continent.
The Champions League is therefore gone for another season – or perhaps even longer. City are by no means guaranteed a place in next term’s edition, even though the Premier League looks set to be granted five qualification berths for 2025/26.
If we assume Liverpool and Arsenal are already over the line, the bookies have City down as favourites to join them in the top five. That feels about right. City are having a poor campaign by their sky-high standards, but they are still one of the strongest sides in the league.
Yet given the extent to which Guardiola’s charges have declined this season and the fact there are numerous teams in the mix for Champions League football, there is no guarantee City will qualify.
Liverpool have their sights set higher than a mere top-five finish. They extended their lead at the summit of the standings on Wednesday courtesy of a 2-2 draw with Aston Villa, yet that result means the Reds have now dropped four points in the last fortnight.
Arsenal have been weakened by injuries to several attackers, but they are on a 15-match unbeaten run and remain in the title hunt for now. By the time this match kicks off, Arsenal will probably have closed the gap to five points (they host West Ham United on Saturday).
This is a massive match for Liverpool, then, and while a trip to the Etihad Stadium is not quite as daunting an assignment these days, Arne Slot will take nothing for granted.

Manchester City vs Liverpool betting tips
Manchester City and Liverpool butt heads in a crunch Premier League clash on Sunday.
Liverpool to win
Liverpool were below par in the recent 2-2 draw with Everton and they were fortunate to beat Wolverhampton Wanderers last weekend after a laboured second-half display.
Their performance against Aston Villa on Wednesday was much better.
Liverpool created the better chances on the night and they would have emerged triumphant had they been more ruthless in the final third. Darwin Nunez was particularly guilty of profligacy, not for the first time.

Slot has given Liverpool more control compared to the Jurgen Klopp era, but this team remains menacing on the break.
City are really struggling to defend in transition and Liverpool are well placed to exploit that shortcoming.
Back Liverpool to win at 5/4 with Paddy Power
Both teams to score and over 2.5 goals
This bet paid out in Manchester City’s trip to Madrid and the chances are that it will be successful this weekend too.
City still carry a threat going forward. That was not the case against Madrid, granted, but they did stuff Newcastle United 4-0 last weekend.
We do not yet know if Erling Haaland will be fit for the clash with Liverpool, but it is worth remembering that Omar Marmoush was the star against City, not the big Norwegian.
Liverpool have kept only one clean sheet in their last five league games, so City should be able to find the back of the net.
The problem is, it is hard to see them preventing Liverpool notching two goals or more.
Go for both teams to score and over 2.5 goals at 8/13 with bet365
Mohamed Salah to score any time
Mohamed Salah was at it again on Wednesday, scoring Liverpool’s first goal and laying on their second.
Salah is having an extraordinary season. Two-thirds of the way through 2024/25 and Liverpool’s No.11 leads both the goal and assist charts.
Salah has already made the net ripple 24 times in 26 top-flight appearances. Meanwhile his 15 assists are five more than Antonee Robinson and Bukayo Saka in joint-second place.
With Josko Gvardiol a key attacking outlet for Manchester City, there should be ample space for Salah to exploit down the right.
The Egyptian has been unstoppable throughout this campaign and City will struggle to keep him off the scoresheet.
