A 25-year-old man has been buried alive in a sand quarry in Kisoro District.
The deceased, Ozius Niyonsaba, a resident of Gakoro Village in Gwingwe Parish, Nyakabande Sub-county, met his death on Wednesday evening.
According to his mother, Gertrude Mukankusi, Niyonsaba attended prayers at Gakoro Catholic Church and later, upon returning home in the afternoon, went to Kabeshero sand quarry in the same village.
In the evening, the quarry caved in and buried him alive. Elly Maate, the Kigezi region police spokesperson, says police and local residents mobilised and later retrieved the body.
This is not the first such tragedy in Kisoro District. In August 2018, Elias Niyonsaba, a Rwandan national, was buried alive near Kisoro Town.
In December 2011, eight people died when a quarry collapsed in Nyamushungwa Village, Mabungo Parish, Nyarusiza Sub-county. The victims had been excavating sand to repair their homes ahead of Christmas.
