According to Vinket Manana, Communications Officer at Redeem International, a non-governmental organization that provides free legal aid services to orphans and widows in the Bugisu region, the organization intervened after receiving complaints from the widow. “We stepped in after Mukite Clementina reported threats made against her by her son, Kurima Mark,” said Manana.

Kurima was arraigned before Bubulo Magistrates Court on Tuesday and remanded to Bubulo Prisons. Manana also noted that Redeem International is managing several other cases within the same family, where children have sued their mother over succession, both in criminal and civil matters at Bubulo and Mbale magistrates’ courts.

Abili Makutusi, the LC1 Chairman for Kurima Cell, confirmed multiple complaints from the widow regarding her son’s threats. “The situation escalated to the point where the Equal Opportunities Commission had to restrict Kurima’s access to the family premises,” Makutusi said.

Julie Salome Namaara, the Namisindwa Resident District Commissioner, urged families to respect each other and highlighted the importance of adhering to inheritance laws. “The laws regarding inheritance are clear, and I call on all parties to remain calm and allow the legal process to take its course,” she stated.

The case is currently under review in court, with authorities encouraging a peaceful resolution in line with legal standards.
