A huge weekend of cup upsets across England and Scotland proved to be a very profitable one for one lucky punter, who turned £5 into more than £1,000 on a lucky double on Sunday afternoon.
Celtic fan Davey placed a fiver on Plymouth to beat Liverpool and Queen’s Park to beat Rangers at combined odds of 206/1 and pocketed £1,035 after both heavy underdogs pulled off major shocks.
Premier League leaders Liverpool were overwhelming favourites for their FA Cup fourth round match in Devon against a Plymouth side rock bottom of the Championship.
Arne Slot’s side were tipped by some to win all four trophies this season, holding a six point lead with a game in hand at the top of the Premier League table, finishing top of the Champions League league phase and having reached the final of the Carabao Cup last week.
The Reds had what was thought to be a kind draw at the home of the Championship’s bottom club, 43 places below their opponents in the footballing pyramid and looking likely to be playing League One football next sesaon.
Miron Muslic and his side had other ideas though, the Bosnian, who took over from former Everton and Manchester United star Wayne Rooney after his sacking in January, led the Pilgrims to a memorable 1-0 win at Home Park in what turned out to be an FA Cup classic.
Aaron Hardie’s penalty early in the second half, combined with standout performances from centre back Nikola Katic and goalkeeper Conor Hazard sent Plymouth into the fifth round draw, where they now face the small matter of an away trip to take on Manchester City.
The second game in Davey’s acca saw Queen’s Park pull off one of the biggest upsets in Scottish Cup history as the second division side secured a 1-0 win at Ibrox to knock out 34-time champions Rangers at mammoth odds of 22/1.
Seb Drozd’s goal in the 69th minute got his side dreaming of a place in the quarter finals of the Scottish Cup, but those hopes appeared to have faded when Rangers were awarded a 97th minute penalty.
But Calum Ferrie saved James Tavernier’s spot kick to send the side placed fifth in the Scottish Championship through to the last eight of the Cup, where they will travel to Aberdeen for a place in the semi finals.
