Liverpool head into Sunday afternoon’s mammoth Premier League clash as favourites for the victory having opened up an eight point lead at the top of the table in recent weeks.

Last weekend’s hard fought 3-2 victory at Southampton leaves Arne Slot’s side with the opportunity to extend the gap between themselves and the four-time defending champions to a staggering 11 points heading into the festive period.

The Merseyside club have won 17 of their 19 matches in all competitions this season, losing just once, and head into the weekend having won six matches in a row following their 2-0 win over European champions Real Madrid on Wednesday night.

Manchester City make the trip to Anfield in the midst of some times of trouble, now six games without victory after giving up a 3-0 lead at home to Slot’s former side Feyenoord on Tuesday night, ending up with a 3-3 draw.

The point in the Champions League ended a run of five consecutive defeats in all competitions, which included a 4-0 thrashing at home by Tottenham last weekend – their first loss at the Etihad in the Premier League since December 2022.

Pep Guardiola’s side’s slump in form leaves them in second place in the league, eight points off the pace of their league leading opponents on Sunday, and just one behind ahead of fifth placed Brighton.

Sunday’s match has become a real must win for City in their bid to win a record extending fifth-consecutive title, with the ability this weekend to either cut the lead to five points, or let it drift to 11 and potentially drop outside the top four altogether.

Liverpool are winless in their last four matches against Manchester City, though their last two meetings have both ended in draws.

The Citizens have only won once at Anfield since 2003, with that win coming behind closed doors in February 2021 during the heavily Covid-affected season.
