Leicester City vs Crystal Palace predictions

Try as they might, Crystal Palace just cannot seem to pull decisively clear of the Premier League relegation zone.

Perhaps they have a chance to do so over the next few weeks. The upcoming fixture list does not look overly daunting, with duels with the likes of Leicester City, West Ham United, Brentford, Manchester United and Everton on the horizon.

Palace ended last season with a bang. They collected 19 points from the last 21 available to surge up the standings under Oliver Glasner, who replaced Roy Hodgson in the Selhurst Park dugout in February.

There was breathless talk of a possible push for Europe this term from some members of the Palace fan base, but the reality has proved much more difficult.

The loss of Michael Olise to Bayern Munich harmed Palace’s attacking output from the get-go, while it took a while for new signings like Maxence Lacroix and Ismaila Sarr to be integrated into the team.

Add to that injury issues and wasteful finishing and Palace found themselves battling at the wrong end of the division from the start. Even now, they are just five points above the bottom three ahead of this week’s trip to Leicester.

It is hard to find anyone who thinks the Eagles will go down this season, but until Glasner’s team open up a substantial gap between themselves and the bottom three, relegation will remain a possibility.

Palace have looked much better of late, though. They have lost only one of their last nine top-flight games, avoiding defeat by the likes of Aston Villa, Newcastle United, Manchester City and Chelsea in that time.

Glasner’s team now need to start putting more wins on the board. Only Brighton & Hove Albion (10) have drawn more games than Palace (nine). Four victories in 20 games is a poor return.

Success at the King Power Stadium would see Palace move 10 points clear of Leicester. It would be difficult for the Foxes to overturn that margin, thus boosting the south Londoners’ survival chances.

On the other hand, a win for Leicester would shrink the gap between the pair to four points. We might only be in January but this is an important game for both teams.

Leicester City vs Crystal Palace betting tips

Leicester City and Crystal Palace will battle it out for all three points as the Premier League returns.

Crystal Palace to win

Ruud van Nistelrooy got his Leicester City tenure off to a glorious start at the beginning of December, overseeing a 3-1 victory over West Ham United.

On the balance of play, however, Leicester were fortunate to pick up all three points. Indeed, West Ham created the better chances on the night.

Since then, the Foxes have picked up just one point out of a possible 18. That does not bode well for this crunch clash with Crystal Palace.

Expected goals is not a perfect statistic, but it does give an indication of a team’s underlying performance across the course of a season. Leicester rank 18th for expected goals difference, while Palace are up in 12th.

If they play to their potential, Glasner’s team should come out on top at the King Power.

Draw at half-time

It usually takes a while for both Leicester City and Crystal Palace to get going.

The Foxes rank second-bottom of the Premier League’s first-half table. Palace are slightly higher in 15th, but the score has been level at the break in almost half (nine out of 20) of their matches.

Both of these teams have scored more goals after the interval than before it, and that could be the case here too.

In the first meeting between these sides in September, Leicester held the lead at the midway point thanks to a goal from Jamie Vardy.

On this occasion, we do not expect there to be anything between Leicester and Palace with 45 minutes on the clock.

Ebere Eze to score any time

For most of the season, Ebere Eze has been underwhelming. Without his old sparring partner Olise, the England international has not been as influential as before.

Crystal Palace fans have often been frustrated with Eze’s propensity to overelaborate in the final third.

Yet there are signs that the attacking midfielder is getting back to his best. He scored against Stockport County in the FA Cup on Sunday, taking his tally to two goals in his last three games.

Eze’s talent is clear for all to see, but he must become more decisive at the top end of the pitch. Against a leaky Leicester backline, Eze should get chances to find the net.
