Lamont Roach’s dad gives blunt statement on Gervonta Davis fight ‘cancellation’

OpenLamont Roach’s dad gives blunt statement on Gervonta Davis fight ‘cancellation’

Gervonta Davis vs Lamont Roach is still going ahead as far as ‘The Reaper’s’ dad is concerned.

Davis is slated to defend his WBA lightweight title against Roach on March 1 at the Barclays Centre in Brooklyn, New York.

However, Davis’ Instagram post on Monday night suggests otherwise.

“The fight is f***ing cancelled,” he wrote on his story.

Davis didn’t provide a reason for the cancellation, nor has he posted since.

But Roach Sr, who is also his son’s trainer, has provided comment to BoxingScene on the matter.

“We haven’t heard anything,” he said in a brief statement. “As far as I am concerned, the fight is still on… Nothing has changed on our end.”

This comes after his son released a statement of his own.

“The f*** ya keep asking me for?” he wrote on his Instagram story a couple of hours after Davis’ initial post.

“He said that s*** not me. I’m locked in ain’t s*** changed.

“March 1st Brooklyn #Andthenew.”

At the same Davis was announcing the cancellation of their bout, Roach released a video of him shadow boxing in the gym after sparring with welterweight boxer Mykal Fox.

It seems the Roach’s are still training but it is presently unclear whether Davis is doing the same.

At the time of writing, you can still buy tickets for Davis vs Roach online, while the event promoter, PBC, hasn’t confirmed a change in the contest’s status.

Roach is the reigning WBA super-featherweight champion and was granted ‘special permission’ by the major sanctioning body to move up in weight and challenge for a world title in a second weight class while retaining his 130lbs strap.

He picked up the black and gold strap by beating Hector Luis Garcia via split decision in November 2023 and defended it against Feargal McCrory in June.

Davis was elevated from regular to full WBA world champion in November 2023 when Devin Haney vacated the belt.

He has only fought once since then, stopping previously undefeated prospect Frank Martin in the eighth round in June to defend his title for the first time.
