John Cena is set to bring the curtain down on his legendary WWE career this year.
The 16-time world champion kicked off his ‘farewell tour’ with an appearance at the Raw Netflix premiere last Monday, where he declared for the 2025 Royal Rumble match.
Cena’s quest to capture a record-breaking 17th world title will no doubt be a big story heading into WrestleMania season, and if he wins the Rumble, he will earn a shot at the belt of his choice come April.
But who would he choose to face in what could be his final match on the grandest stage of them all?
Well, his own father has a few ideas.
Speaking to Sportskeeda, John Cena Sr was asked about a potential WrestleMania match between his son and current World Heavyweight Champion, Gunther.
“I think you have two young men in there, and John is still young, two different styles,” he began.
“Gunther, if you look at his style, it’s more Greco Roman, he’s right in there, does those smart wrestling snap moves when John is more about get in, do his thing, and make the win.
“I think it would be very interesting, I think they would complement each other. I think that would be one heck of a competition.”
Cena Sr even offered a prediction for how the match would finish, backing his son to pick up the win.
“I think John Cena wins that match the same way he wins every match,” he said.
“There’s going to be an ‘Attitude Adjustment’, a ‘You Can’t See Me’ and one, two, three count.
“Let me say this, if he is going to fight Gunther, that will not be an easy match. If he doesn’t come out victorious, there’s be nothing to be ashamed of there, but my money is on him.”
Cena Sr was then asked about the possibility of his son facing Undisputed WWE Champion Cody Rhodes, as has reportedly been discussed within the company.
However, he believes that is less likely to happen.
“I think that match is reserved for The Rock, I really do,” Cena Sr continued.
“I think you’re going to see The Rock against Cody Rhodes at WrestleMania 41. But should John Cena face Cody Rhodes… I think that would be a very heated awesome match to watch. They’re not different, they’re very similar in their ways.
“I have nothing but good words for Cody Rhodes, I just think Gunther right now is at the peak of his career. He’s the best of the best… I would think that Gunther vs Cena would be the match. I think that’s the person you should face, the best of the best.”
With Cena expected to wave goodbye to wrestling in 2025, WWE will want to send him out in style.
That would include a WrestleMania match for the ages, and as his own father suggests, someone as dominant as Gunther would be the perfect opponent.
