PGA Tour star Billy Horschel definitely doesn’t hide the fact he’s a huge West Ham fan.

In fact, during last year’s Open he went viral for sporting a huge claret and blue bag with the club’s badge on the side.

It was one of many occasions the American has expressed his unlikely love for the Hammers from across the pond.

And Horschel has revealed that it was watching the film Green Street in his college days that sparked his love for the east London club.

“It’s a funny story, I’ve told it a thousand times and Mark Noble always rolls his eyes when he’s around,” he joked with talkSPORT.

“I was in college and went to buy some DVDs because my cable [TV] wasn’t set up yet.

“I bought Green Street and watched the movie and absolutely fell in love with West Ham and wanted to be a part of the GSE.

“I just loved that entire craziness and that was back in 2006. Here we are in 2025 and I just love the Hammers.”

Asked whether he manages to watch much of the Premier League side, he responded: “I watch as much as I can.”

“If they’re playing and I’m not playing golf, I’m watching, doesn’t matter what time it is.

“I’ll wake up early to watch them and it’s great because over here in the US on NBC and Peacock we can stream any game we want no matter what it is in the UK.

“I watch them all the time and I love it. It’s become a very big passion of mine now.”

Horschel added that he had not yet managed to convert any other PGA Tour players to watching Premier League sides, or indeed the Hammers.

“It’s got a little bit bigger out here,” he added.

“There are some guys that have got into it but I think some of my American counterparts don’t enjoy the subtle aspects of the game, or how it can end in a tie [draw] and be nil-nil.”

The 2005 film is centred around football hooligans in the UK and follows the story of an American student (Elijah Woods) who is expelled after cocaine is discovered in his room.

Despite it belonging to his roommate Jeremy, he offers him $10,000 to stay quiet and subsequently, Matt travels to London where he discovers football culture.

With West Ham United he then becomes involved with the Green Street Elite (GSE) as they battle rival ‘firms’ of hooligans.

Horschel’s first love is still golf – and the world no.20 has won eight times on the PGA Tour.

He is also a regular competitor on the DP World Tour, winning its flagship BMW PGA Championship twice, in 2021 and 2024.

During his most recent Wentworth appearance, crowd favourite Horschel was met with cries of ‘come on you Irons’ as he went round.

Horschel will be competing at this week’s WM Phoenix Open – which is live on talkSPORT 2.
