‘I feel unclean’ – Simon Jordan names only Canelo Alvarez vs Terence Crawford replacement fight which makes sense

EntertainmentSports‘I feel unclean’ – Simon Jordan names only Canelo Alvarez vs Terence Crawford replacement fight which makes sense

Simon Jordan believes there is only one fight that makes sense for Canelo Alvarez now that the Terence Crawford clash is dead in the water.

Canelo and Crawford were reportedly close to finalising terms for a money-spinning showdown at Las Vegas’ Allegiant Stadium in September.

Fans were clambering to see the pound-for-pound greats square off in a fight that pitted two former undisputed champions against each other.

Crawford, who previously unified all the belts at super lightweight and welterweight, was set to move up two weight classes to challenge Canelo at his natural home of super middleweight.

However, according to Ring Magazine, those negotiations have now fallen through.

If this proves to be the case, then Jordan thinks Canelo vs Chris Eubank Jr is one of the few fights left that makes sense for the Mexican superstar as he enters the twilight of his career.

“The one fight, as much as I feel almost unclean uttering these words if Eubank Jr were to beat Connor Ben, then there is enough money in the room for a Eubank Jr fight versus Canelo Alvarez fight,” Jordan said on talkSPORT’s White and Jordan show on Thursday lunchtime.

“There’s enough in that fight because Jr carries a lot of juice in terms of people’s perception of him, whether I think it’s right or wrong, his father’s legacy, all the show that goes with it, if he were to beat Conor Benn, irrespective of the fact that Conor Benn is coming up two weight classes.

“Well, a weight class now, given he has fought at 154lbs in America, I can see that.”

Eubank Jr and Canelo were in negotiations to face each other last year, but BOXXER chief Ben Shalom informed talkSPORT.com that talks collapsed after they couldn’t reach a number which ‘Next Gen’ felt was acceptable.

If Canelo comes back with a better offer, then we could see that fight happen, provided Eubank Jr comes through unscathed against Conor Benn in April.

However, it seems far more likely that Canelo will be fighting Jake Paul next.

There are several reports suggesting that Canelo and Paul are in preliminary talks over a crossover clash in May.

And talkSPORT’s Ade Oladipo can see why Canelo would want to entertain it.

“The youngsters would say cap, which means no there is absolutely no truth to it,” said Oladipo.

“I will say this, there’s enough money in it, and it’s financially, the biggest fight that can be made in boxing.

“And I hate to say it but it really is. I heard Eddie Hearn the other day talking about it in terms of numbers.

“If it goes on Netflix, you’re talking hundreds of millions. You really are.

“Canelo would knock out Jake Paul in a round if he wanted to. So if you are Canelo and this was to come across your table.

“‘What Jake Paul wants to pay me 100million to fight? I’ll do it’.

“And I think he’s at the stage of his career, Canelo, where he’s already proven himself to be one of the world’s best-ever fighters.

“Fun fights for the most money, he will weigh up the risk and reward, and there’s zero risk in Jake Paul and the reward is so big.

“Why not do it for 100m and then fight Crawford in September?

“So as crazy as it sounds for people listening, I know there’s a lot of hardcore boxing fans that don’t like it but it’s about money. And if it makes money, it makes sense.”
