‘I call it cheating’ – Gary Anderson stormed out of interview and threatened to quit over ‘snarking’ and ‘sniffing’

EntertainmentSports‘I call it cheating’ – Gary Anderson stormed out of interview and threatened to quit over ‘snarking’ and ‘sniffing’

Garry Anderson once stormed out of a post-match interview after accusing his rival of cheating.

The two-time world champion won his first group-stage match at the Grand Slam of Darts in 2020 against 18-year-old Adam Gawlas but he was not happy at all.

Anderson was frustrated by Gawlas’ ‘snarking’ and ‘sniffing’ which threw him off.

The Sky Sports post-match interview started off in a light tone with the 54-year-old joking about his knee injury but his frustration was soon released.

He said: “When you get players that snark in your ear every time you throw.

“It always seems to come from the same team. Then it gets on your nerves a bit.

“So would I pull out [of the tournament]? Yeah. Because darts isn’t darts anymore.

“You need to have a word with everyone who watches darts. Call it gamesmanship? I call it cheating and I’ll see them through there when I go through.

“I’ve still got a sore knee though. It’s not upset me. Ask a lot of players, they don’t say anything. I’ll say something.

“If they’re all sniffing they better get their test again. That’s the way I look at it.”

As the Scot walked off he was asked about match, in which he responded: “They are all tough players. Anyway, have a good time. See you later.”

Anderson’s comments have got him into trouble on plenty of occasions in the past.

In 2012, he was banned from three tournaments, including the European Championship and tour events in Stuttgart and Zuiderduin, after failing to finish his match at the European Tour Event 2.

Seven years later Anderson was given a formal warning by the DRA after a clash with Gerwyn Price which led to a push.

Luckily the sporting body deemed it as ‘non-aggressive’ and said he was ‘significantly provoked’.

Price, however, was initially fined £20,000 for his behaviour at the Grand Slam of Darts but the amount was halved.

It was all part of a crackdown aimed at deterring gamesmanship.
