Here’s an Early Look at the Volvo EX60

Science and TechnologyAutoHere's an Early Look at the Volvo EX60

Yesterday, we finally got to see the ES90, a pseudo sedan with a practical tailgate and the higher ground clearance of an SUV. However, Volvo showed more than that since it also provided a teaser for the EX60. At the 24:55 mark in the video below, the electric crossover “accidentally” makes a brief appearance in the clay studio. This Easter egg rewards those who had the patience to watch the whole reveal event.

It’s obviously a deliberate move from the Swedes to generate buzz around an upcoming product. The EX60 looks exactly like you would expect, featuring an upright rear and vertical taillights flanking the tailgate’s glass to echo the EX30, ES90, and EX90. The EM90 electric minivan sold in China also has LEDs on both sides of the rear glass.

The EX60 has been in the works for a while, having been announced last September. It will be the brand’s first production model to ride on the SPA3 platform, an evolution of the SPA2 architecture that has underpinned cars like the ES90 and EX90. The new hardware will usher in “several key upgrades,” like more computing power and greater modularity.

Volvo says SPA3 will allow the company to make cars smaller than the EX30 and bigger than the EX90, should it decide to expand its lineup. Additionally, the platform has been conceived exclusively for electric vehicles, therefore removing “the old constraints of the combustion engine,” according to the company’s Head of Engineering, Anders Bell. He also said SPA3 is a platform developed entirely by Volvo, without any ties to parent company Geely.

The EX60 appeared in a generic teaser last month, alongside several new products currently in the pipeline. Two additional but unknown models on the SPA3 architecture will follow. Meanwhile, prototype testing of the EX60 will commence this year before the production model’s launch in 2026. It has some big shoes to fill, considering the gas-fueled XC60 has consistently been the company’s best-selling model in recent years.
