Open‘Gods are against us’ – Rob Edwards to leave Luton amid fears of back-to-back relegations

Rob Edwards is set to leave Championship club Luton by mutual consent, talkSPORT understands.

The 42-year-old had been under huge pressure at Kenilworth Road amid fears the club could suffer shock back-to-back relegations.

Luton earned rave reviews in the Premier League last season as a result of their attacking style of play, but they ultimately were unable to beat the drop.

Tipped as one of the favourites to secure promotion back to the top-flight, the Hatters are instead competing to stay in the second-tier.

In what has been a horror campaign so far, Luton currently sit in 20th spot following Monday night’s 2-1 defeat away at QPR.

Four consecutive losses have left Luton just two points above the bottom three, with the prospect of League One football next term a very real possibility.

Speaking after the loss at Loftus Road, a dejected Edwards said: “Every week on the road we seem to be getting hit and hit and hit.

“Things have gone against us recently. It just seems the footballing gods are against us.

“The results are not good enough. The players are giving everything, but we are in a results business.”

Edwards and Luton have now agreed to part ways – although no official announcement has been made yet.

The former Watford boss took over Luton in November 2022, where he guided them to unlikely promotion to the Premier League via the play-offs.

It was the first time that Luton were back playing first division football since 1992.

Luton’s promotion also saw them become the first team to go from the top-tier to non-league and then back again.

In what has been a fairy tale story, Luton’s current situation is turning into a nightmare.

No other club has lost more than the club’s 15 in the Championship this term.

Meanwhile only Plymouth – rooted to the bottom of the table – have conceded more than Luton’s 44 goals shipped in.

It was only last week which saw a defiant Edwards insist he would not walk away as he vowed to turn around Luton’s fortunes.

He said: “I’m realistic and I know the situation, I don’t fear that, I’m going to keep working hard and what will be will be.

“I’m not stepping away from this, I’m not walking away at all, it makes me want to turn things around.

“As much as I want things for this football club, I have a family to provide for, I want to work.”

Attention for Luton will now turn towards finding a successor to Edwards as they prepare to face high-flying Nottingham Forest at the City Ground in the FA Cup on Saturday.
