Foxconn is apparently on the verge of designing and manufacturing electric vehicles for two unspecified Japanese companies. The Taiwanese electronics maker has expressed interest in cooperating with Nissan, but Foxconn chairman Young Liu did not mention which companies are being considered.
Focus Taiwan reported that Liu said last week the company plans to sign agreements within the next two months for its design and manufacturing services. Liu revealed in February just before the Honda-Nissan merger collapsed that Foxconn was interested in working with Nissan. He said the company wanted to provide its services to Nissan instead of acquiring it.
Now that Nissan has a new CEO, not only is the Honda merger possibly back on the table, but the struggling automaker could be far more open to additional deals as it tries to fix its finances, and Foxconn could be a solid partner. The electronics company, formally known as Hon Hai Precision Industry Co, wants to expand its EV operations that former Nissan executive Jun Seki is leading.
Foxconn’s chairman also said last week the company plans to begin producing its Model C EV in North America by the end of this year, which it first announced in 2021. Foxconn’s interest in electric vehicles also threatens established automakers like Nissan, which are struggling right now amid growing competition from China. Nissan’s woes are well known, with the company taking drastic actions over the last year to cut costs.
