David Wagner has been interviewed for the Plymouth Argyle vacancy, talkSPORT understands.
Plymouth announced on New Year’s Eve that they mutually agreed to part ways with Wayne Rooney following a dismal run of results.
Rooney left with the club sitting bottom of the Championship table and on a winless streak of nine games.
The Pilgrims appointed the Manchester United legend in May but are now seeking his successor in a bid to avoid relegation this season.
Germany-born Wagner is a candidate for the job at Home Park and has previous experience in the Premier League with Huddersfield Town.
The 53-year-old guided the Terriers to the top flight in 2017 and secured their safety in their first season, but left at the start of 2019.
Wagner, who was also interviewed by Stoke City before they hired Mark Robins, was most recently at Norwich City.
He spent a season-and-a-half at Carrow Road but was sacked in May after a Championship play-off semi-final defeat to Leeds United.
Former Plymouth boss Steven Schumacher has also been interviewed for the job.
Schumacher first joined the club in 2019 as an assistant to Ryan Lowe before succeeding him as manager two years later.
He won the League One title in the 2022/23 season to send Plymouth back to the Championship for the first time since 2010.
The 40-year-old left to join Stoke in December 2023 but was dismissed at the start of this season after just nine months in charge.
Plymouth are only three points away from safety but Portsmouth, who sit just above the relegation zone, have a game in hand.
Kevin Nancekivell has been in interim charge of the club since Rooney left and helped seal back-to-back draws.
He may be set to remain in the post for their FA Cup third round trip to Brentford on Saturday.
Plymouth then make their return to the Championship three days later to host Oxford United, who are eight points above them in 17th.
