Everton vs Peterborough United predictions
Staying in the Premier League is the only thing that matters for Everton this season.
With the club set to move into a new 53,000-seater stadium at the start of next term, it is unthinkable that the Toffees are relegated to the Championship at this important juncture in their history.
However, Everton fans are not taking anything for granted. Those who identify with the blue half of Merseyside tend to pessimism at the best of times, but it is not hard to see why positivity is in short supply right now.
Everton are one of the toughest teams to watch in England’s top flight. Sean Dyche’s style of play has never been expansive, but things have got worse this season rather than better.
Only last-placed Southampton, one of the worst teams in Premier League history up to this point, have scored fewer goals than Everton.
Meanwhile Dyche’s men rank joint-bottom for possession and joint-second bottom for shots on target. Worst of all, Everton are 20th out of 20 for expected goals, a measure of chance quality.
Everton followers do not necessarily expect their team to play free-flowing football every week, but Dyche’s style is only tolerable when you are picking up results. Unfortunately for the former Burnley boss, that has not been the case of late.
In fairness to Dyche, his ability to set up a defence helped Everton to draws with Arsenal, Chelsea and Manchester City in December. However, back-to-back defeats by Nottingham Forest and Bournemouth have lowered the mood since then.
“The runs still not really on paper, a bad run if you add wins in, but we haven’t had wins,” Dyche said after the Bournemouth defeat. That statement, it is fair to say, did not go down well with the Everton fan base, many of whom are now openly calling for a change in the dugout.
Everton have scored one goal in their last five matches. They are now just one point above the bottom three, with the club’s new owners doubtless looking over their shoulder with a degree of trepidation.
The FA Cup is not a priority for Everton right now, but Dyche desperately needs a win on Thursday to bolster his position. If the Toffees were to lose to Peterborough United, Dan Friedkin and co. might find themselves on the lookout for a new manager.
Everton vs Peterborough United betting tips
Everton will be looking to avoid an upset when they host Peterborough United on Thursday.
Everton to win and under 3.5 goals
Peterborough United also find themselves at the wrong end of their division, namely League One.
Like Everton they are on a five-game winless streak, and now sit 19th in the third tier following a 1-0 loss to Wrexham last time out.
That is good news for the Toffees, who should come out on top in front of their own fans on Peterborough’s first ever visit to Goodison.

We are unlikely to see an abundance of goals, however. Everton’s defence is pretty solid and their attack is lacklustre. That is not a recipe for a high-scoring game.
Add to the fact that Dyche is likely to rotate ahead of back-to-back home league games against Aston Villa and Tottenham Hotspur, and three goals or fewer looks very likely.

Second half higher scoring
Peterborough United have conceded 46 goals in League One this season, more than anyone else in the division.
They will aim to keep things tight at the back early on in this match, knowing that Everton fans could get on the team’s back if things are not going well.
In the end, though, Everton’s superior quality – both in a rotated starting XI and off the bench – should be decisive.
There have been 17 goals in Everton’s first halves in the Premier League compared to 23 after the break.
This FA Cup third-round tie will probably follow a similar pattern.

Beto to score any time
Dominic Calvert-Lewin might be a willing runner, but every team needs their centre-forward to chip in with a few goals now and then.
After being one of the most wasteful strikers in the Premier League in 2023/24, Calvert-Lewin has made the net bulge just twice in 17 games this season.
Armando Broja has been given the nod up front of late, but Thursday’s meeting with Peterborough United could bring a starting role for Beto.
The Portuguese is not the most polished player in the world, but the Everton fans appreciate his endeavour.
Whether or not he is Premier League quality is up for debate, but Beto looks well equipped to cause problems against lower-league opposition.
