Everything is coming up roses.
Derrick Rose that is.
On a night where the Chicago Bulls are hosting ‘Derrick Rose Night‘ during Saturday’s game against the New York Knicks, the legendary franchise had another surprise for their legendary point guard.
The Bulls surprised Rose with an announcement that they will officially be retiring Rose’s iconic No. 1 jersey into the rafters next season.
An honor that looked to catch Rose off guard, as he burst into tears upon hearing the news.
Rose, a Chicago native, played eights seasons with the Bulls, and became the youngest MVP in NBA history, at just 22-years-old.
He will now be forever enshrined and honored by the franchise.
No Bull will ever wear No. 1 again…except for one condition that CEO Michael Reinsdorf made clear.
If Roses’s son, P.J., finds himself on the Bulls, then he will be allowed to wear his dad’s iconic #1.
“I’m just telling you,” Reinsdorf said.
“Nobody’s wearing that number one jersey again, unless, P.J. is a Bull.
“Then he’s wearing that number one jersey, all right? Is that fair?”
Rose and Reinsdorf shared an emotional embrace, and it was clear what the honor meant for Rose.
The Bulls have only retired four numbers in franchise history: Jerry Sloan’s No. 4, Bob Love’s No. 10, Michael Jordan’s No. 23 and Scottie Pippen’s No. 33.
It is something they rarely do, yet for Rose, it was a must.
No. 1 will now be in the rafters forever, that is of course unless another Rose (Jr.) pops up on the floor of the United Center.
