Bizarre finale saw snooker star collapse to the ground after losing match

EntertainmentSportsBizarre finale saw snooker star collapse to the ground after losing match

In sport, sometimes the tension can become all a bit too much.

That was unfortunately the case for former snooker world champion Peter Ebdon at the Royal London Watches Grand Prix in 2008.

The 54-year-old began his campaign at the tournament brightly as he breezed past Simon Bedford 5-1 in the first round.

Ebdon’s win set up a tantalising second round match-up against Jamie Cope, who had upset No. 3 seed Stephen Maguire in his tournament opener.

Despite the anticipation going into the match, Ebdon and Cope constantly shot themselves in the foot by missing easy pots.

Unfortunately for Ebdon, one of his early misses robbed him in his bid for a maximum 147 break.

In the second frame and on 122, Ebdon failed to pot a green and immediately put an end to his hopes for the maximum.

Ebdon’s frustration was evident as he swung his cue in the air.

But, rather surprisingly, it was not the craziest reaction Ebdon would have following a mishap on the baize.

Cope and Ebdon had four frames each as the second round clash went to a deciding ninth frame.

It was Cope who stole a march on his rival with a break of 68.

However, he missed out on potting a red, which meant Ebdon needed two snookers.

Ebdon laid the first snooker and Cope couldn’t escape.

Cope managed to wriggle his way out of trouble from a harder snooker, but gifted Ebdon a way back in when he missed the yellow after he was snookered for a third time.

Yet Cope escaped the snooker one more after a miss was called and by doing so, somehow managed to snooker Ebdon.

The 2002 world champion could not believe his misfortune.

Upon realising his fate, Ebdon dropped his cue, tossed his chalk into the air and ultimately fell to the ground in disbelief.

Given his reaction to being snookered, Ebdon could not escape.

It gave Cope the opportunity to wrap up victory and he duly obliged, winning 5-4 to eliminate the No.10 seed.

Unfortunately for Cope, his giant-slaying run came to an end in the quarter-finals as Ryan Day sent him packing with a 5-1 victory.

But at least the 39-year-old will always have the memory of sending a former world champion collapsing to the ground thanks to one of his shots.
