Birmingham v Stockport predictions
Birmingham head into this midweek’s standout League One fixture as strong favourites for a home victory against their promotion rivals, with just one defeat in their last 10 matches in all competitions heading into the bout.
Sunday’s 2-1 win at Blackpool in the FA Cup made it back-to-back victories for Chris Davies’ side after their shock 3-2 defeat against then-bottom of the table Shrewsbury around 10 days ago, which has seen the Blues drop down to third in the table.
The West Midlands side head into midweek a point behind Wrexham, who occupy the second and final automatic promotion places, albeit the Welsh side having played two more matches, and four points shy of the league leaders Wycombe, with a game in hand.
Birmingham are one of just two sides in the third tier yet to be beaten at their home stadium in the league, though take on a Stockport team who have lost the joint-fewest games away from home in League One this season, with just one to their name.
Dave Challinor’s side take a three match winning streak into their trip to the West Midlands, as the newly promoted side look to overtake their opponents and break into the top three as they hunt back-to-back promotions.
Stockport boast the best defensive record away from home in the division, but have only won two of their last six matches on the road ahead of their match in the Second City on Wednesday night.
The Hatters are aiming for promotion this season in order to reach the second tier for the first time since their relegation from the division in 2002.
Both teams take strong records into Wednesday’s promotion bout, but I expect Birmingham, spurred on by their home fans with their impressive unbeaten record at St Andrew’s, to get the victory by a 3-1 scoreline.
Birmingham v Stockport betting tips
Stockport striker Louie Barry is the runaway leader at the top of League One’s goal scoring charts, with 14 goals in 18 games in all competitions, including four in his last three.
The Aston Villa loanee is being linked to reports of his parent club recalling him in from his loan spell in January and sending him back out on loan to the Championship, due to his success in the third tier, and it would be brave to bet against him bagging for the Hatters in such a crucial game on Wednesday night.
Birmingham should have the quality and strength in depth to overcome this week’s test, sitting just a point outside the top two with two games in hand, and having picked up 16 points from their last six home games.
