Jordan Henderson insists he’s happy to stay at Ajax following his winter window transfer saga.
Henderson was reportedly set to complete a winter move to Monaco after just one year in the Eredivisie.
The former Liverpool midfielder is said to have requested the free transfer amid uncertainty over his role as the Ajax captain.
A report said Henderson removed the armband before their Europa League win against Galatasaray on Thursday.
Others said that the decision over the captaincy that night was made by head coach Francesco Farioli though.
However, despite telling Ajax to let him go for free or he’ll never play for them again, he’s had a change of heart and decided to stay.
Henderson reiterated his position after their 2-1 De Klassieker derby win against Feyenoord on Sunday.
“I am happy to stay here,” he said via TheEuropeanLad on X, with the Englishman also saying: “There has been a lot written in the press which was bang out of order.
“About how I wanted to force myself way out, I was hurt by that. I am a human being, I got family, my friends and kids are seeing this.”
When asked about the potential move to Monaco, he said: “Honestly. I didn’t really know. I wasn’t sure what was going on on the night of the Galatasaray game.
“After the game we managed to sort it out. Thankfully we came to the conclusion that it was best to stay here.”
Farioli has also confirmed the 34-year-old’s status at the club and shut down the prospect of an exit before the transfer window shuts.
“Jordan Henderson is definitely staying, he is our captain,” he said via the Daily Mail. “The story is closed, 100 per cent.”
Henderson started and played the full 90 minutes of Ajax’s latest win as they went 14 points clear of their rivals in the Eredivisie.
It was his 33rd appearance of the season and 45th in total for Ajax since signing in January 2024.
The stint has followed a difficult spell in Saudi Arabia with Al Ettifaq, whose coach was his former teammate Steven Gerrard.
Henderson’s contract was mutually terminated after he spent just six months in the Saudi Pro League.
Now back in Europe, the veteran midfielder has the opportunity to win another major trophy to add to his glittering Liverpool success.
Ajax are second in the Eredivisie and just two points behind leaders PSV Eindhoven with a game in hand.
They are also in the Europa League knockout round play-offs and face Royale Union Saint-Gilloise for a place in the last 16.
