When money is no object – what do you buy yourself?

Well, if you’re football sensation and trading card collector Antoine Griezmann you can literally do that – buy yourself.

Griezmann is a keen collector of sports trading cards

It’s not, though, an act of narcissism, merely the beauty of capturing a moment in time.

Those in ‘The Hobby’ – as it’s affectionately known – love to own history.

Cards can capture goals, celebrations, tackles, and glorious triumphs.

Some are autographed, while others can even have match-worn shirts inset into them.

And Griezmann knew he had to have a piece of his own incredible career when he had the opportunity.

But in a career where often you can get things for free thanks to your superstar status, the French World Cup winner had to go down a very basic route.

He had to head to eBay.

And that’s how the Atletico Madrid legend started his bulging card collection, which now includes NFL, MLB, NBA, and even NHL memorabilia.

Asked how it all began, he told Topps: “Two and a half years ago, I started with a chrome card from my first year, my rookie card.

“I think Koke, our captain, has some chrome cards of his own, but I’m a real collector and I believe there is no football player that is collecting like me with rooms full of cards.”

Griezmann has been the recipient of a famous ‘Lost Rookie’ card from Topps.

The card represents the first time a legendary player has featured in a UEFA club competition, whether that be the Champions League or Europa League.

Gradually released, stars like Cristiano Ronaldo, Lionel Messi, Zinedine Zidane, Ronaldinho, and more also have them.

And when released they cost just £8.99, however, Griezmann’s most expensive card even surprised him, despite his knowledge of sports trading cards.

When told his 2017 Topps Chrome Superfractor polygraph was sold for $5,100 (£4,127), the French forward was stunned.

And that led to him revealing he has his first ever trading card.

“I think on eBay, I bought my rookie card at 10, PSA 10. From 14 years ago. So I have it in my room.”

Since Topps took over the UEFA Club Competitions, you can now get numbered parallels of each player – including a unique one of one card.

But while one like his 2017 Topps Chrome Superfractor polygraph has appeal – like a true collector – his first ever card is the one he holds dearest.

“I think my rookie card is more special,” he added.

Away from his own cards, Griezmann has a number of cards from sporting heroes past and present.

Asked about his best pull, he said: “I have a Topps Mercury of Victor Wembanyama, maybe that one. And if that’s not the best, a hockey one, a Bryan Bedard one, out of 25.

“I would love to have Michael Jordan one of one, or maybe a Wembanyama one of one.

“For example, the Wembanyama and LeBron one of one. That would be my dream.”

But if you’re new collecting, who does Griezmann think you should be looking to buy?

He added: “It could be Lamine Yamal in football. It could be Wembanyama in basketball. Gunnar Henderson in baseball. And American football, CJ Stroud.”

Wise words, Mr Griezmann. Better get down to the Fanatics store in Westfield London…
