Manchester United vs Ipswich Town predictions

It could have been worse.

Manchester United turned in another poor all-round performance last time out, but at least they found a way to avoid defeat.

It did not look like they would after an hour of their meeting with Everton. The visitors to Goodison Park went 2-0 down in the first half and barely threatened the opposition goal in that time.

The Toffees remained on top after the interval until Bruno Fernandes found the bottom corner with a well-placed free-kick.

That gave United hope and, to be fair to Ruben Amorim’s beleaguered boys, they did stage a late fightback. Manuel Ugarte’s first goal for the club earned United a point that went some way to stopping the rot.

It is a measure of how far United have fallen that a 2-2 draw with Everton is now regarded as cause for celebration. Yet that is their present reality and Amorim was understandably pleased with the heart his side showed in the closing stages at Goodison.

In a purely footballing sense, though, there was not much to like. This United squad still looks utterly unsuited to Amorim’s 3-4-3 system, but the Portuguese continues to insist he will not change.

United created very few chances from open play, with both of their goals coming from set-pieces (either directly or indirectly). At the other end, they made sloppy mistakes and struggled to prevent Everton fashioning opportunities. In the middle of the park they looked comparatively limp and lacklustre.

Make no mistake, this was a let-off for United. At the same time, could it prove to be a turning point?

Amorim needs it to be. United have got worse on his watch. It is all very well talking about a long-term plan, but no manager in the world can completely neglect short-term results. Amorim’s authority will be weakened if his team keeps losing games.

In the grand scheme of things, Ipswich Town’s need for a win is arguably greater than United’s. A 4-1 loss to Tottenham Hotspur on Saturday, coupled with Wolverhampton Wanderers’ 1-0 success against Bournemouth, has left Ipswich five points adrift of safety.

Wolves have a reasonably kind run of fixtures coming up and they will increasingly fancy their chances of finishing above the dreaded dotted line. Ipswich are up against it, but a victory at Old Trafford would keep them in contention.

Manchester United vs Ipswich Town betting tips

Manchester United will be looking to return to winning ways when they host Ipswich Town this week.

Manchester United to win and both teams to score

Ipswich have been the most competitive member of the promoted trio this term, but that is not really saying much given how poor Southampton and Leicester City have been.

McKenna’s team have still only won three games in 2024/25, while they have collected only two points from the last 21 on offer.

Of course, Manchester United’s recent form is poor too, so it is far from guaranteed that the hosts will come out on top here.

But the fightback against Everton has at least given United something to build on, and despite their problems they still have more quality at their disposal than Ipswich do.

A clean sheet could be beyond Amorim’s charges, but we still fancy them to come out on top.

⚽ Select a Manchester United win and both teams to score at 15/8 with Tote ⚽

Over 2.5 goals

If Ipswich do find the back of the net on their first visit to Old Trafford in the Premier League since 2001, Manchester United would need to score twice to emerge triumphant.

Ipswich’s leaky backline should give them hope. Only Southampton and Leicester have conceded more goals this season, but the expected goals data shows that the Tractor Boys have given up the second-most chances.

United should have some joy, then, even without their best attacker Amad Diallo. Alejandro Garnacho’s probable return to the starting XI should make them more of a threat.

At the same time, Amorim will not be overly confident about a defensive unit that looked very shaky at Goodison Park. United have kept just one clean sheet in their last 13 league games.

Whichever way you look at it, expect goals on Tuesday.

Bruno Fernandes to score any time

Even before his free-kick got Manchester United back into the game against Everton, Bruno Fernandes was the one visiting player who looked like instigating something for his team.

Fernandes’ tendency to moan at his team-mates has been held up as evidence that he is not suited to the role of captain, but no one can deny that the attacking midfielder leads by example.

The Portugal international has been deployed in a deeper role at times recently, but he still looks like United’s most effective difference-maker in the final third.

Fernandes is also a dead-ball specialist, as he demonstrated against Everton at the weekend. United’s skipper can make the difference again here.
