Brest vs PSG predictions

Ever since the club was bought by Qatar Sports Investments in 2011, Paris Saint-Germain have been consumed by their desire to win the Champions League.

More than a billion euros has been thrown at the team in pursuit of that goal, but time and time again PSG have fallen short.

Back home, the odds are stacked in their favour to a remarkable degree. No one can compete with PSG’s financial dominance of French football, so they tend to hoover up Ligue 1 titles while spending most of the campaign in second gear.

Yet as PSG’s owners soon realised, the Champions League is much harder to win. Despite finishing as runners-up in 2020, PSG have been eliminated in the round of 16 more often than they have reached the semi-finals.

The powers that be at the Parc des Princes reasoned that the club’s best chance of success was to assemble a star-studded team of galacticos. That culminated in a two-year spell in which Neymar, Lionel Messi and Kylian Mbappe formed PSG’s frontline. In terms of individual talent, it was one of the greatest front threes in the history of the game.

But football is not an individual sport. Mbappe, Neymar and Messi produced plenty of magic against inferior opposition, but their presence in the same XI left PSG hopefully unbalanced on the continental stage.

None of the trio was particularly keen to track back or press from the front, so PSG’s opponents were able to pick them off with ease.

In 2022 PSG were beaten by Real Madrid in the last 16. A year later they lost to Bayern Munich at the same stage. In other words, as soon as they faced a fellow European heavyweight, the French side came unstuck.

Neymar and Messi departed in 2023, before Mbappe’s long-awaited move to Real Madrid went through last summer. The galactico era at the Parc des Princes is now over, but that has arguably increased rather than decreased PSG’s chances of winning the Champions League.

Luis Enrique’s young, effervescent team have even earned admiring glances from neutrals this term – an unusual feeling for PSG.

Despite a tough draw in the league phase, the Parisians secured a play-off berth with back-to-back victories over Manchester City (4-2) and Stuttgart (4-1) on matchdays seven and eight. Fellow Ligue 1 side Brest await in the play-offs.

Brest vs PSG betting tips

Can Brest spring a surprise against PSG in the first leg of this two-legged tie?

PSG to score in both halves

Merely qualifying for the Champions League was an extraordinary achievement for Brest. But before the league phase began, it was widely assumed that they would just be making up the numbers.

Instead, Brest won half of their eight games to finish 18th, above more European heavyweights such as Juventus and Manchester City.

They were doubtless disappointed to draw PSG, a team they face at least twice per season anyway, in the play-offs.

Brest lost 5-2 at home to PSG in Ligue 1 the weekend before last and a similar outcome here is a distinct possibility.

Brest will not simply sit deep and shut up shop, so this should be an open game in which PSG create plenty of chances.

Over 3.5 goals

Brest did not expect to get this far in the Champions League, so they will view this as a free hit. The pressure is all on PSG.

Eric Roy’s team have adopted that attitude throughout the campaign, as evidenced by results such as a 4-0 away win at Red Bull Salzburg.

PSG are in fine form at the moment. They have won nine of their last 10 matches in all competitions and have looked particularly impressive in attack.

Luis Enrique’s men have scored 26 goals in their last eight outings, including five in that triumph over Brest and four against Monaco last time out.

In those eight games, this bet would have paid out five times. It is also worth noting that there were four goals in the first meeting between PSG and Brest in 2024/25.

Khvicha Kvaratskhelia to score any time

PSG strengthened their squad in the January transfer window, bringing Khvicha Kvaratskhelia to the club from Napoli.

The Georgia international has been included in Luis Enrique’s squad for the Champions League knockout phase, so we should see him in the starting XI on Tuesday.

Kvaratskhelia opened his account for PSG at the weekend, finding the net in his new team’s 4-1 victory over Monaco.

“It is the best feeling to score like this, in front of the fans. I’m happy to be here, I’m the happiest tonight,” he said after getting off the mark for the Parisians.

Brest can be open defensively, which makes them the sort of team that Kvaratskhelia relishes facing.
