Birmingham vs Newcastle predictions

The good times are back at Birmingham City.

The Blues sit top of League One. They are into the semi-final of the Football League Trophy, and on Saturday they have a great chance of claiming their biggest scalp of the season when they host Newcastle United in the FA Cup.

Chris Davies’ team are on course for an immediate return to the Championship. The Blues spent over £30 million on a summer rebuild after their shock relegation from the second tier of English football.

So far, so good. The investment is paying off with the Blues four points clear of second place Wycombe at the top of the table. Birmingham also have two games in hand on all their title rivals.

Birmingham got to the fourth round of the FA Cup by beating Lincoln City 2-1 at St. Andrew’s. Goals from Ayumu Yokoyama and Lyndon Dykes were enough to see off their League One opponents.

The Blues are six matches unbeaten since. The only team to prevent Birmingham winning is Wrexham.

League One’s other ‘celebrity club’ held the Blues to a 1-1 draw at the Racecourse Ground on January 23rd.

Since the two dropped points, Birmingham has defeated Huddersfield (1-0) and Rotherham (2-1) in the Championship. In their most recent outing on Wednesday, the Blues beat Stevenage 1-0 to progress to the semi-final of the Football League Trophy – £15 million signing Jay Stansfield came off the bench to score the 83rd minute winner.

Newcastle United sealed their place in the fourth round of the FA Cup by defeating League Two Bromley 3-1 at St. James’ Park. Goals from Lewis Miley, Anthony Gordon (P) and William Osula cancelled out Cameron Congreve’s eighth-minute opener for the visitors.

Since the third round win over Bromley, the Toon has only picked up six points from a possible 12 in the Premier League.

A routine 3-0 home win over Wolves was followed by a surprise 4-1 home loss to Bournemouth. Eddie Howe’s team got back on track with a 3-1 win away at Southampton. But a second successive home defeat against Fulham followed, with the Geordies losing 2-1 to Marco Silva’s team last Saturday.

Eddie Howe’s team stopped the rot at St. James’ Park on Wednesday with a 2-0 win over Arsenal in the 2nd leg of the Carabao Cup. The Geordies started the match with a 2-0 lead from the 1st leg.

In the end the match was comfortable with goals from Jacob Murphy and Anthony Gordon sealing a 4-0 aggregate win and another Wembley final for Eddie Howe and his team.

Birmingham vs Newcastle betting tips

The Blues will feel this is a good time to be playing the Toon Army. Eddie Howe’s team will still be on a high after Wednesday and could be vulnerable. Check out our Birmingham vs Newcastle betting tips below:

Birmingham and the draw in double chance

The bookmakers make Newcastle their red hot favourites to beat Birmingham. There are two leagues between the two clubs, so this is understandable.

Nevertheless, there is potential for an upset here.

Birmingham are riding high, while Newcastle has produced a couple of suspect performances in recent weeks.

The Toon’s 2-0 win over Arsenal on Wednesday clinched a place in the Carabao Cup final. There could be a hangover of euphoria from that match when Eddie Howe’s team take to the St. Andrew’s pitch on Saturday evening.

Birmingham is 11/4 to qualify for the next round. They are also 33/20 to win or draw in the double chance.

Just in case it’s a draw and Newcastle find a way to win the tie, we think backing Birmingham and the draw in the double chance market makes more sense.

⚽ Back Birmingham and the draw in double chance at 33/20 with Casumo ⚽

Jay Stansfield to score anytime

Jay Stansfield grabbed the summer headlines with his big money move to St. Andrew’s from Fulham.

The striker has repaid his new employers with 17 goals in 25 matches in all competitions.

Stansfield recently went five league matches without a goal. He put an end to that run with a brace in Birmingham’s 2-1 home win over Rotherham on Saturday.

The former Fulham striker then followed that up with the only goal of the game in the 1-0 win over Stevenage in the FLT on Tuesday.

All but one of Stansfield’s league goals have been scored in clusters. He’s had a recent barren spell, and he’s come back with three goals in his last two matches (in all competitions). Back him to make it three matches in a row.

⚽ Back Jay Stansfield to score anytime at 23/10 with Betfred ⚽

BTTS and over 2.5 goals

Newcastle has scored and conceded in their last three Premier League outings. Bizarrely, they stopped the rot in the Carabao Cup win over Arsenal on Wednesday.

Eddie Howe could rotate some of his players against Birmingham. And this could lead to more defensive confusion at the back.

Birmingham are flying high, and they will feel they can find the net against Newcastle. And no matter what team Eddie Howe puts out, his players are Premier League quality and should be able to score at St. Andrew’s.

Had we been convinced Newcastle would win this, we would have gone for over 3.5 goals at 11/8. But as we sense a chance for the Blues, we will instead go for both teams to score and over 2.5 goals.

This bet covers 2-1 to either team.
