‘Maybe one day’ – Patrick Mahomes in awe of Chicago Bulls three-peats but Michael Jordan-esque baseball hiatus not in plans

EntertainmentSports‘Maybe one day’ – Patrick Mahomes in awe of Chicago Bulls three-peats but Michael Jordan-esque baseball hiatus not in plans

Becoming the first team in NFL history to win three consecutive Super Bowls is hard enough.

Accomplishing a three-peat with the Kansas City Chiefs, stepping away from football, then returning to pull off another three-peat?

Patrick Mahomes is in awe of the real GOAT

It’s almost unthinkable, Patrick Mahomes said.

Yet that’s exactly what Michael Jordan did with the Chicago Bulls, and Mahomes can barely even imagine what it took for MJ to become the GOAT of the NBA.

“One-hundred percent. I think at any level, to have that much level of success is crazy,” Mahomes exclusively told talkSPORT on Thursday at a hotel in New Orleans.

“So for him to be able to win a 3-peat, take time off, come back to basketball again and do it again, that’s something that will probably never be done again in any sport.”

Mahomes will make history on Sunday if the Chiefs defeat the Philadelphia Eagles in Super Bowl LIX at the Superdome.

The new face of the NFL will also pull closer to seven-time champ Tom Brady, who is announcing the big game, as the greatest quarterback of all-time.

But with each passing year, Jordan’s achievements with the Bulls become even more remarkable.

With Phil Jackson on the sideline and Scottie Pippen as a superb No. 2, MJ won it all in 1991, ’92 and ’93 to form a Bulls dynasty.

A stunning basketball retirement and experiment with Minor League Baseball followed.

“I have reached the pinnacle of my career,” Jordan said in 1993. “I just feel I don’t have anything else to prove.”

Then Jordan was back and the Bulls dominated the NBA again, winning the Finals in 1996, ’97 and ’98 for a second three-peat.

“I’m going to try to continue to win this game this weekend and continue to have success,” Mahomes said.

The Last Dance ended it all for Jordan in Chicago.

But any time LeBron James is compared to MJ, Jordan’s perfect 6-0 record in the Finals is the ultimate answer.

For Mahomes, lifting another Lombardi trophy in the Superdome is his only focus.

Considering what he might do professionally after he wins it all for the third time isn’t a current thought.

“I don’t know,” Mahomes said. “I’m probably going to focus on football a little bit longer.

“But maybe one day I’ll be able to get out there and at least get some (baseball) spring training or something like that.”

Mahomes giving up the NFL for baseball isn’t as crazy as it seems.

During his youth, he threw a brilliant no-hitter and struck out 16 batters in a baseball game.

Mahomes was so good at baseball that he hit 95 mph on a radar gun while pitching on the mound, and also went 3-for-4 with a home run, double and three RBIs at the plate.

Jordan hit .202 with three home runs, 51 RBI, 46 runs, a .556 OPS and 30 stolen bases in 1994 while playing for the Class AA Birmingham Barons.

MJ also has two three-peats that feel impossible almost 30 years after his last world championship.

The Chiefs must overcome Jalen Hurts, Saquon Barkley and an intense Eagles defense just to win their first-peat.

Doing it all over again for a second time feels like something that can only happen in another sports universe.

“I couldn’t even envision being able to do that,” Mahomes said.
