Wednesday football tips
Bet of the Day – Newcastle v Arsenal – Newcastle to win @ 2/1 (90 mins)
Newcastle hold a commanding 2-0 lead from the first leg of their League Cup semi-final when they entertain Arsenal, with a place at Wembley now in their sights.
However, even though Eddie Howe’s side are in charge of the tie, the Magpies are unlikely to slacken off at home against the Gunners.
Newcastle’s long search for silverware means everyone associated with the club is desperate for a trophy this season, and they are sure to be up for the second leg when they will be roared on by a fervent St James’ Park crowd.
Arsenal, in contrast, could lack a bit of focus in the north east as the Premier League title race and their bid for glory in Europe this season arguably remain higher priorities.
The chances of Mikel Arteta’s side overturning a two-goal deficit looks remote, and with the hosts determined to book their place at Wembley, a home win on the night looks good value at 2/1.
Special of the Day – Coventry v Leeds – Leeds to win and both teams to score @ 29/10
Championship leaders Leeds remain firmly on course for promotion as the Whites are two points clear at the top in the second tier following their 7-0 home hammering of Cardiff on Saturday.
They should navigate a tricky trip to Coventry in midweek and come away with another important three points, although the hosts are also in form too and Leeds, who have not conceded for four league games, should finally see their backline breached in this one.
City are on a fine four-match winning run going into Wednesday’s clash themselves and during that spell Frank Lampard’s side have hit seven goals.
The Sky Blues should be able to get on the scoresheet at least – they have scored in all but one of their last 14 matches at home – even if it is unlikely to be enough for them to take anything out of the game.
Long Shot of the Day – Celtic to beat Dundee 4-0 – Correct score – 7/1
Celtic should have few problems swatting aside Dundee at home as their procession towards another Scottish title continues.
Brendan Rodgers’ side are in good shape as, after securing a play-off place in the Champions League, they overcame Motherwell 3-1 on Sunday to stay firmly on control at the top.
Dundee, who are down in 10th place in the table, were embarrassed by Hearts at the weekend, losing 6-0 at home, so their confidence will be low heading into the toughest test in the country in Glasgow.
Celtic look almost certain to win but trying to find a value bet in the clash leads us to suggesting a 4-0 defeat for the Dark Blues at Celtic Park, which is tempting in the correct score market at 7/1.
