Tiger Woods revealed that his late mother was the reason behind his iconic sporting look.

The golfing GOAT was famous for wearing red jerseys on some of his most special occasions on the course, and it subsequently became something of a trademark.

Some of the best moments in his career came while he donned red, including his incredible chip shot at 2005 Masters, as well as during his against-the-odds Masters triumph in 2019 – to date his most recent Major.

Explaining why he wears red, Woods told The Today Show: “My mom thought that, being born a Capricorn, that red was my power colour.

“So in some of the junior golf events in SoCal I wore red and I won, okay? So in spite, I wore blue.

“I didn’t win and so I then switched to red and I had a lot more success wearing red.

“I then said, ‘okay mom, I’ll make a deal with you that I’ll only wear red on the big events – on the last round of big events – because I can’t wear it every single day.

“I’ll wear it on the last day of big events. She said ‘fine, just wear it the last day.”

Woods’ father, Earl, is often credited with teaching him to play golf but when presented with the Bob Jones Award from the USGA in 2024, Woods took his chance to thank his mum, Kultida.

“My mom doesn’t get enough credit,” he said.

“”Everyone thought it was my dad when I went on the road, which it was, but Mom was at home.

“If you don’t know, Mom has been there my entire life. She’s always been there through thick and thin.”

Sadly Woods’ mother passed away on Tuesday with the 15-time major winner paying an emotional tribute on social media.

Woods wrote: “It is with heartfelt sadness that I want to share that my dear mother, Kultida Woods, passed away early this morning.

“My Mom was a force of nature all her own, her spirit was simply undeniable.

“She was quick with the needle and a laugh. She was my biggest fan, greatest supporter, without her none of my personal achievements would have been possible.

“She was loved by so many, but especially by her two grandchildren, Sam and Charlie. Thank you all for your support, prayers and privacy at this difficult time for me and my family. Love you Mom.”

‘Tida’ Woods was in attendance at TGL on January 27 to watch her son compete in the new simulator golf league.

Woods was seen talking to his mother in the crowd, joking that he would try ‘not to suck’ after a disappointing debut.

It summed up an intimate and loving mother-son relationship that Woods benefited from throughout his glittering career.
