Manuel Pellegrini has hailed Antony as a ‘quality player’ following the forward’s man-of-the-match display on his Real Betis debut.

The 24-year-old recently linked up with the LaLiga side on a straight loan deal from Manchester United until the end of the season.

Antony was keen to depart Old Trafford following a lack of game time having featured in just eight Premier League games this term – with each of his appearances coming off the bench.

Since his £86million switch to United from Ajax in 2022, the Brazilian has been a source of ridicule from fans due to his dismal displays.

But he has immediately endeared himself to the Betis faithful having starred in their 2-2 draw against Athletic Bilbao on Sunday evening.

With just 15 minutes on the clock, Antony played a pivotal role in Betis’ opener.

Busting a gut to get on Cedric Bakambu’s through ball, Antony drifted in from the right wing before seeing a fiercely-struck low shot well saved by Unai Simon.

Unfortunately for the visitors, Isco was quickly on hand to tap home from close range, with Antony spotted passionately celebrating as if he had scored himself.

And he was unlucky not to register an assist after slipping in Johnny Cardoso, only for the midfielder to see his effort well saved.

It was one of two key passes Antony made from his 72-minute outing, while he also completed 83 per cent of his 24 attempted passes.

His performance saw him handed the Most Valuable Player award – much to the delight of ex-Manchester City boss Pellegrini.

Lauding the winger, the Betis manager said: “Well, I think it was a very positive debut.

“He’s a quality player. I was talking to him just before the game.

“I think a good player doesn’t have to be constantly showing off his skills with the ball.

“He has to play a good game, make few mistakes and do two or three important things: a goal, a good pass, a good cross.

“I think he was very involved today, especially with the second goal.

“He had just arrived a couple of days before and I think he’s going to contribute a lot to us.”

For Antony, his performance was one of vindication having been subject to regular criticism at United, with club legend Rio Ferdinand just one person that wanted him offloaded.

Taking to Instagram, Antony was quick to comment on his pride at being named as the player of the match, as he stated: “Let’s go for more! Happy to be elected MVP!”

He will be looking to impress once again when Betis face Celta Viga at the Estadio de Balaidos on Saturday afternoon.
