Bayern Munich took a huge step towards winning the Bundesliga title with their 2-1 win away at Freiburg last Saturday.
Not only did the Bavarians pick up their fifth successive Bundesliga win on Matchday 19, they also extended their lead at the top of the table by a further two points.
Bayern’s main rival for the championship, Bayer Leverkusen could only manage a 2-2 draw away at RB Leipzig. The dropped points ended Leverkusen’s eight-match winning streak and allowed Munich to open up a six-point buffer over the defending champions.
Bayern completed their Champions League group matches on Wednesday. The Bavarians clinched their place in the Round of 16 playoffs with a 3-1 win over Slovan Bratislava.
But Bayern finished 12th, leaving them outside of the coveted top eight. So now they have the added distraction of playing in a two-legged playoff to get into the Round of 16 proper.
The playoffs will take place in February, giving Munich an additional two matches to play. Leverkusen finished sixth in the group, so won’t have that distraction. Their next European action isn’t until early March.
Munich will now have to negotiate playing in midweek throughout February while Leverkusen have their feet up. So, the Bavarians can’t afford any slip ups against the likes of Holstein Kiel, especially at home.
Holstein Kiel is finding their inaugural season in the Bundesliga very difficult.
Die Störche have won just three matches all season. They are currently 17th in the table on 12 points, and have been in the bottom two since Matchday 3 of the campaign.
There is some good news for head coach Marcel Rapp and his team, two of their three wins have come in Holstein’s previous five fixtures.
In fact, Holstein has picked up seven points out of their last available 15.
The run started with a 5-1 win over Augsburg on Matchday 15, the final round of fixtures in 2024. Any new year optimism soon disappeared as Rapp’s team lost 3-2 to Frieburg when the Bundesliga resumed after its winter break.
But Holstein didn’t let that setback affect them negatively and immediately bounced back with a sensational 4-2 win over Dortmund on Matchday 17.
The following weekend didn’t go to plan as Die Störche lost 3-1 at home to Hoffenheim. But showing there is still fight left in this team, Holstein bounced back with a credible 2-2 draw away at Wolfsburg last weekend.

Holstein Kiel has scored an average of 1.47 goals per game in the Bundesliga this season.
Holstein’s problem is simple. They concede too many. Die Störche have given up an average of 2.52 goals per game. And with 48 goals conceded, they have the worst defensive record in the Bundesliga.

Since missing the 1-0 win over Monchengladbach on Matchday 16, Jamal Musiala has been eased back into the Bayern team with his minutes increasing game-by-game.
The goalscoring midfielder played 83 minutes in last weekend’s 2-1 win over Freiburg, the most he’s played since his return.
Musiala managed another 28 minutes in the Champions League on Wednesday, registering one assist in Bayern’s 3-1 win.
The 21-year-old is yet to score in the Bundesliga since the resumption after the winter break. His drought has lasted three games domestically. But, with nine goals in his first 13 Bundesliga matches (nine in 16 in total), Musiala looks due a goal.
In a match that looks set to be a goal fest, this looks like the ideal opportunity for Vincent Kompany to get his talented goal scoring midfielder back on track.
