The Ministry of Agriculture, Animal Industry and Fisheries (MAAIF) has lifted the quarantine on the movement and sale of livestock and livestock products in Rukungiri District after declaring that foot-and-mouth disease in the area is under control.
The ministry imposed the ban in April 2024 after confirming an outbreak of the disease. In May 2024, MAAIF and district authorities launched a massive livestock vaccination campaign to curb its spread.
In a letter dated January 2025 and signed by Dr. Rose Ann Ademun, the Commissioner for Animal Health at MAAIF, the ministry informed the Rukungiri District Chief Administrative Officer that through strategic vaccination and sensitization of farmers, the disease had been contained.
The letter officially lifted the restrictions but advised that vaccination efforts against the disease should continue.
Johnson Ninsiima, the Rukungiri District Veterinary Officer, confirmed receipt of the letter on Thursday and urged farmers to remain vigilant against the disease.
