The people of Green Bay, Wisconsin aren’t happy.

If Patrick Mahomes and the Kansas City Chiefs beat the Philadelphia Eagles in Super Bowl LIX, they will be the first team in NFL history to win three Super Bowls in a row.

However, they won’t be the first team to win three championships in a row.

That’s because the Green Bay Packers have already done it.

Twice.

Once from 1929-1931 under Curly Lambeau, and again from 1965-1967 under Vince Lombardi.

However, the championships weren’t called ‘Super Bowls’ back then, but rather ‘NFL championships’ before the merger from 1922-1969.

Prior to the merger in 1970, the NFL and the AFL held an undisputed Championship Game called the AFL-NFL World Championship Game, beginning in 1966, signifying the official start of the Super Bowl era.

The Championship Game was renamed to the Super Bowl after 1968.

Following along?

Lambeau’s titles are classified as NFL championships, not Super Bowls.

He won six of those, including the three-peat from 1929-1931.

And Lombardi’s championship he won in 1965 is just that, a championship, not a Super Bowl.

He won three championships, and then when the Super Bowl era began in 1966, he won the first two, including Super Bowl I, over the Chiefs.

In total, from 1965-1967, he won one championship and two Super Bowls in back-to-back-to-back years.

At the end of the day, a lot of it is semantics.

If the Chiefs win Super Bowl LIX, will they technically be the first team in NFL history to win three Super Bowls in a row?

Yes.

Will they be the first to win three titles in a row?

No.

And that is what has upset the people of Green Bay and cheeseheads across the country.

Specifically, the Packers’ official team historian Cliff Christl.

When asked by a fan whether it was fair or not to bump down Green Bay’s three-peats in comparison to what the Chiefs are possibly about to do, Christl scoffed at that notion.

“It would show an ignorance of NFL history for anyone not to mention the Packers twice winning three straight NFL championships,” Christl said.

“But there are too many other places where those records are overlooked, and I’ll all but guarantee it will turn into an avalanche of oversights if Kansas City wins a third straight.”

Green Bay fans alike vehemently agreed with Christl.

“NFL propaganda is only talking about SB era, the NFL has more than 100 years. So we have the most championships and we’ve done the three-peat twice,” one fan wrote on X.

“What the Chiefs are seeking is historic, but it’s not unprecedented. Thats just a lie,” another fan posted on X.

Packers fans have a legitimate gripe considering the NFL has been marketing the Chiefs’ current run through the lens of accomplishing the first ever three-peat.

And while true, it doesn’t paint the whole picture.

It’s okay to acknowledge the past, without tainting the future.
