Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney have expanded their football portfolio by purchasing Colombian side La Equidad.

The Hollywood duo, along with actor Eva Longoria, are part of a US consortium that is fronted by real estate investor Al Tylis and executive of Mexican side Club Necaxa, Sam Porter.

The consortium also consists of Major League Baseball pitcher Justin Verlander and his model wife Kate Upton, who have acquired over 99 per cent of the club at a valuation in excess of $30million (£24.5m).

Speaking to The Athletic, Porter said: “I am pleased to confirm that Al Tylis, our investment partners, and I have successfully acquired Club Deportivo La Equidad.

“This is an incredible opportunity to enhance the club’s growth in every aspect and to become an integral part of Colombian football.

“We are privileged to collaborate with an outstanding group of investors, including Eva Longoria, Ryan Reynolds, Rob McElhenney, and Shawn Marion, who have been instrumental in our project at Club Necaxa in Mexico.

“Together, we are committed to elevating the club to its highest potential.”

La Equidad are based in the Colombian capital of Bogota with the club’s home stadium, the Estadio Metropolitano de Techo, having a capacity of 10,000.

They finished 13th out of 20 teams in the Colombian top flight in 2024.

As well as owning Wrexham, Reynolds and McElhenney also hold a minority stake in Club Necaxa.

The Tylis-Porter group previously acquired around 50 per cent of the Mexican club in 2021, with Reynolds and McElhenney investing in April last year.

In exchange, the consortium in Necaxa took a reciprocal stake in EFL side Wrexham.

Filming has already taken place for a docu-series on Necaxa, entitled ‘Bienvenido a Necaxa’ (Welcome to Necaxa), with reports stating that FX and Disney+ Latin America have landed the show.

Like in hit series Welcome To Wrexham, Reynolds and McElhenney will be executive producers and on-air stars.

It remains to be seen if the duo will be involved in a similar style of documentary around their newest venture La Equidad, but with Reynolds, McElhenney and Longoria all owning their own production companies, it seems very possible.

While another documentary could be in the works, Reynolds and McElhenney will be hoping they replicate the on-field success that they’ve seen with Wrexham.

Back to back promotions from the National League and League Two mean that the Welsh side are now in the third tier of English football.

Sitting third in the table, Wrexham are currently just two points off the top of the table and have genuine aspirations of playing in the Championship next season.
