Brock Purdy and the San Francisco 49ers could be about to collide.

There is mutual respect between both sides.

There’s also the reality that Mr. Irrelevant is on the verge of being paid like one of the best players in NFL history, yet Purdy was the final pick of the 2022 draft and the 49ers are coming off a disappointing 6-11 season while missing the playoffs.

“A lot of quarterbacks can go into San Francisco and look pretty good,” Pro Football Talk’s Chris Simms said.

“He’s what, a top 20-ish quarterback in football? Top 20?

Normally, a 23-13 record as a starting quarterback would not equal a potential $300 million payday.

But the QB market has been reset year after year, with Deshaun Watson‘s $230 million fully guaranteed deal changing everything, and Jerry Jones giving Dak Prescott $60 million a year becoming the new norm in the NFL.

Purdy wants to have his new deal done before training camp.

The 49ers prefer to draw out negotiations in the hope of finding a win-win for players and the organization.

And that’s where a collision could occur.

Simms is not the world’s biggest Purdy fan.

In fact, Simms is so down on Purdy that he ranks the San Francisco QB below Baker Mayfield, and believes that the 49ers must play financial hardball with Mr. Irrelevant.

“Baker Mayfield is making 30 (million) and you’re not even close to as good as Baker Mayfield — sorry,” Simms said.

“That’s where the rubber has to meet the road. At one point, one of these teams is going to have to go, ‘Just because he’s our quarterback doesn’t mean we have to make him one of the five highest-paid guys in all of football.’

“That’s insane. It’s ruining teams.”

Purdy was on one of the best-value contracts in the NFL this year, earning $1.1 million.

However he could soon make Prescott-type money.

If Purdy averages $60 million a year, he would make $300m on a five-year contract.

Simms believes that Purdy is worth half of that, at best.

“If I’m the 49ers, I’m offering like $30 million,” Simms said.

Then he lowered the bar seconds later.

“I’m offering 25 (million),” Simms added.

Deebo Samuel, Trent Williams, Christian McCaffrey and Brandon Aiyuk have all had contract issues with the 49ers.

Last season, deals for Aiyuk and Williams affected the team during the preseason and the lingering carry over might have hurt the 49ers on the way to an 11-loss campaign.

Purdy regressed in 2024 after finishing fourth in MVP voting in ’23 and almost winning the Super Bowl.

Simms is adamant that the 49ers have the upper hand in negotiations and Purdy doesn’t deserve to be paid like a superstar — and not even like Mayfield.

“I’m going, ‘Go ahead, tell me whoever else out there is going to give you that money and make you the starting quarterback,’ ” Simms said.
