OpenShane Lowry destroys Guinness myth after question about drinking habits

After Cristiano Ronaldo’s famous blow to Coca Cola’s share prices, golfing superstar Shane Lowry is aiming to get them back on their feet.

The Irishman has revealed it’s actually his favourite drink, despite his reputation as a Guinness lover.

Winner of The Open in 2019, Lowry has been known to enjoy himself after big wins, two of his biggest being the Ryder Cup in 2021 and 2023.

The County Offaly native has regularly been spotted back home with a pint of Ireland’s most famous tipple, but all is not as it seems.

Asked about scenes of him over the border in Portrush after his major victory, Lowry said the idea of him as a party animal isn’t quite true.

“I wouldn’t say it’s very accurate at all but I’ll let people think what they think,” he told Golf.com.

“I’m pretty easy going, I do love having a good time with my friends when I get the chance but you don’t get that much of a chance anymore.

“I’m married now with two kids and they take up most of my time.”

To the disappointment of Guinness’ shareholders, Lowry went on to endorse another product.

“One of my favourite things to do in the evenings is to sit down and have a Diet Coke,” he admitted.

“People think I love drinking so much, don’t get me wrong, I like having a drink, but sitting back having a Diet Coke I’m a pretty happy man.

“Diet coke in the evenings and coffee in the mornings and I’m pretty happy.”

Lowry has plenty of reason to be happy right now, given that he’s part of Tiger Woods and Rory McIlroy’s Tomorrow’s Golf League.

The indoor venture uses a giant simulator and putting greens to condense a sport that normally takes place over miles into one single stadium.

The opening showing got underway in Florida’s SoFi Center on Tuesday as Lowry teamed up with Ludvig Aberg and Wyndham Clark to thrash Rickie Fowler, Matt Fitzpatrick and Xander Schauffele 9-2.

Speaking afterwards, Lowry said: “The last time I’ve had that much fun was probably last September,” referencing the last Ryder Cup win.

“I think some weeks can be monotonous and tough, but this is just something different and something fun.”

Creator Woods was over the moon, adding: “This was just a dream conjured up.

“It’s hard to believe that dream came into reality and we were able to take golf into another stratosphere.”
