Boxer Paul Bamba has tragically passed away just days after winning a WBA Cruiserweight title, his manager Ne-Yo confirmed.
The 35-year-old, who was once scheduled to fight Tommy Fury, died on Friday – six days after beating Rogelio Medina Luna in New Jersey.
Bamba’s career highlight on December 21 saw him crowned the WBA Gold Cruiserweight world champion.
It had been the perfect statement to becoming the first client of singer Ne-Yo’s new management company.
The musician has now released a statement confirming the boxer’s passing, although the cause of death has not yet been revealed.
“It is with profound sorrow that we announce the passing of beloved son, brother, friend and boxing champion Paul Bamba, whose light and love touched countless lives,” Ne-Yo and the Bamba family said in a joint statement.
“He was a fierce yet confident competitor with an unrelenting ambition to achieve greatness. But more than anything, he was a tremendous individual that inspired many with his exceptional drive and determination,” the statement continued.
“We are heartbroken by his passing and kindly ask for privacy and understanding during this difficult time as we collectively navigate our grief.”
Bamba extended his record to 19-3 after forcing ex-super middleweight title contender Medina Luna to retire after six rounds.
The Puerto Rican saw a scheduled bout with Tyson Fury‘s brother Tommy in November 2022 cancelled due to weight problems.
He had since called out TNT’s former rival Jake Paul following his latest victory which saw him break a longstanding Mike Tyson record.
Bamba’s triumph over Medina Luna was his 14th knockout of 2024, which passed Iron Mike’s feat for most wins in a calendar year via KO.
On Christmas Day, he wrote on Instagram to share his achievements: “This year I set out with a goal. I did just that!
“Wasn’t easy there were many obstacles that I adapted to overcame and kept on the path we set regardless of extenuating circumstances.
“14 fights 14 knockouts ending with the WBA GOLD cruiserweight world title.
“Blessed to have my family my team and all my supporters along the way. That being said if you got what some might call an “outlandish goal” GO chase it. Anyone who thinks that isn’t as brave as you, prove people wrong!”
Ne-Yo, born Shaffer Chimere Smith, worked with Bamba in the gym having signed him to his company on November 25.
Following his win last week, the 43-year-old also celebrated Bamba’s success on social media, writing: “Last night PAUL BAMBA made history! Breaking Mike Tyson’s record, 14 fights in one year ALL RESULTING IN KNOCKOUTS!
“Ending the year with a cruiser weight WORLD TITLE! ! And the best is yet to come. Congrats my guy! ! Honored to be your manager. Let’s keep going!!!”
