United now fear that the 25-year-old could be out for several months and may not return to action until March.

It follows two other injuries for Mount already this season having also missed three months with a calf injury last term.

The former Chelsea man has made just 12 appearances during the current campaign.

Mount took to social media last week after his injury forced him off against Manchester City.

In an Instagram post, he wrote: “Words can’t portray how devastated I’m feeling right now.

“You could probably see the look on my face when it happened. I knew what it meant.”

Meanwhile, Ruben Amorim confirmed on Friday that Mount would be out for a prolonged period.

Speaking ahead of the match against Bournemouth, the Portuguese explained: “Several weeks.

“I don’t know the exact date, but it’s going to be for long. And that’s it, it’s part of football and you continue.”

Mount’s injury lay-off adds to a growing list of absentees for Amorim to deal with.

Matthijs de Ligt, Victor Lindelof and Luke Shaw are also all currently sidelined.

However, De Ligt could be fit enough to return against Wolves on Boxing Day.

United travel to Molineux on Thursday following Sunday’s 3-0 home loss to Bournemouth.
